loose challenger at speed
« on: February 05, 2004 - 10:52:00 PM »
My sons new 71 challenger seems a little loose at 65- 70 mph. It has   the original 14" wheels . I was told most of the front end parts were new and they were inspected  by a tire man and he verified that. It is not bad, but just not what I would like it to be. We have new 15" classic Cragar rims we are going to put on soon. What would be the best tire choice for improving this problem?

Make sure the toe in is adjusted properly for the wider tires probably 3/16" min, & check the condition of the coupler in the steering column they can often be loose
B F Goodrich would be the last choice for tires , I`m really not sure what is available for good quality performance 14" tires anymore though

Or check the steering wheel play (free), all it might need is aligning. Does it take him longer than usual to hit the turns, like when he needs to adjust his position on the road is the wheel free playing (loose) like can he move it  3 or 4 inches before it actually makes the car move?

NO, if anything it seems to react too quickly to steering input. would wider tires on the front help this?

I never got to drive a chrysler muscle car when I was younger so I have no knowledge of how they are supposed to handle. However I did drive my step fathers 70 Torino cobra and do not remember it seeming loose at speed. I currently drive an F250 crew cab and have not really driven a car in years. I do know that several years ago I had a wobblling problem with my work truck that was caused by under inflated tires.

I'm lost mate I don't have any idea sorry mate. Only thing I can think of is that's how they handle?  ;D I have to keep adjusting my car at those speeds every once and a while, but it's not a pain and I think it's normal. I would know when it was not surpose to be like that but I think yours may have something that needs attention. But I'm not the man to help.

Where's Chryco he might have something up his sleeve.

Hope you find out and I to will be looking for the answer.  :)

check the toe in ,it can make it too sensitive or too loose
