Out of curiousity, what do you think constitutes "building and engine"? I would say, from what you're posting, you can put parts together. Because at some point in the past you have, and it worked. That does not mean you can truly build an engine, or that you can't, but it does say you dont know near what you think you do about it. Sorry, 'cause I dont mean to sound like an Ahole about it. But, you can buy the best parts known to man, and mess up assembling and ruin it. You need all the right parts, machined right, and the knowledge of what they need to do thier jobs together. It makes no difference if they are refurbished old stuff, or come from one source as a package. Packages are easier to buy, because you rely on the sellers opinion and judgement and experience. But when it comes down to putting it together, tosssing them together doesnt gaurantee your engine is very good or will last. So talk to your machinist. If he's good, he'll steer you right. If not, he'll make promises he won't deliver on, you'll pay too much for the results, and /or end up paying twice. :money:

Actually I understand what you mean.  Yes I have put an engine together before and it worked.  No I do not know how to BUILD an engine.  I do not know what lift to go with or what size valves or that stuff.

But yes - that's why I'm here asking questions, and why I'll be going to the engine shops and asking questions (and of course if they don't do it right, there'll be hell to pay.)  I'm still not ruling out the idea of just buying it "off the shelf," I'm just weighing all my options.

CP, Sorry, I wasnt trying to be a tool... Sorry if it came accross that way.

'73, my point was, if you know the theory, never mind the exact right parts, you can much better choose a shop, and products, and understand the charges associated with the choices they will make for you. Price is the next to last thing to ask. What it needs to do is what you need to know, then how the machinist either makes it better, of refurbishes it. Tehn you can look into what does what and how much and from whom. As it's the details that seperate good from not good, and cheap from expensive. :2thumbs:

I also agree and understand.

I definitely had no intention of walking into a machine shop and saying "Do this.  Period."  I just wanted to get little more thorough understanding of what is physically happening inside these (and other) components so that when I DO walk into a shop I can speak in a knowledgeable fashion and be ready to answer question that I may be asked.

I do certainly hope I haven't upset anyone here by asking these questions.  Please understand I only entered into this business in the past few years, but graduated among the top of my class at Wyoming Technical Institute because I ASKED so many questions.  I know a lot of people were annoyed because I was always interrupting the lectures - mainly annoying the kids who thought they already knew everything.  But that's also why I'm working a higher-up position for a major company instead of turning wrenches in bubba-joe's garage.

I WANT to understand this stuff - to learn what's really going on.  I hate having to say "What's that dohickey?" or "What the heck does THAT do?" but know that when you answer, I'm paying full attention, and I'll probably never have to ask again.

Again my apologies if I've irritated anyone.

Thank you for your help.  I've learned so much from the members of this group.
