Yesterday pulling out of the parking lot at the golf course the spring that runs between my clutch pedal and the dash broke.  I drove the car home and it didn't seem to make a difference.  Do I need to have the spring replaced?  I thought I read somewhere that it was only needed on cars with diaphram type pressure plates, which mine doesn't have anymore.  I kinda like it without the spring as now the pedals sit almost even with each other.  Before the clutch pedal sat higher up than the brake pedal.

I think the spring might help pull the pedal all the way up in case something hangs up (like mine does and does not always return all the way up), but if you are not having any problems driving it as is, then maybe you don't.  :dunno: My concern might be that if the pedal does hang up a little bit, the clutch might not fully engage and you will get slippage (is that a real word?).

the spring does 2 things , it pulls the pedal up at the top of the travel to allow the release brg to stay off the levers extending its life by not turning aall the time & it helps pull the pedal down to lower the preesure needed to depress the clutch pedal , Diaphragms say they do not need the clutch but this has to shorten the life of the release brg

Right or wrong, I did not use the spring when I had  a Mcleod borg and beck 3 finger clutch behind my 440.  I got about 20k miles on the clutch before the release bearing died and had to be replaced.  This was 20+ years ago.

Stick a couple of screwdrivers between the coils, install the spring, pull them out.  That's what I did. Easy.

I took my spring out because I am running a centerforce diaphragm clutch. They are a pain in the ass to remove and I can only imagine a bigger pain to install. I did like 71chmark said and used screwdrivers....good luck with installing a new one.

An old trick, similar to the screwdriver thing was to use a handfull of big washers and put them between the coils to make the spring longer, then when the spring is put in, step on the pedal and all the washers fall out when the spring expands.
