Painless or Ron Francis?? Anyone used one or both
« on: January 30, 2008 - 05:45:42 PM »
I need to order my wiring harness for my car and wanted to know what you guys have used in the past. I like the painless but do not like the idea of having to have the terminals pre-wired in teh block. It just sounds easier to attach the accessory plugs and then run back to the block?? A couple of things to remember about my build. It is a create 392 Hemi which means that all of the engine harness is there with it's own fuse box. I need to control the fuel pump, gauges, radio, lights, turn signal, air pump, power windows. The inginition switch will be in the dash and not on the column. Any thoughts?

I helped put it in....I personally wouldn't buy that kit after working with it.

I'm making my own replacement harness because:
  • No standard ones will work, because I have non-standard stuff like MSD-ignition, pressure switches, etc.
  • I don't want a cut & spliced harness from trying to make a standard one work.
  • I found (from here, thanks guys!) that I can order the special plugs needed from Rbevans7@aol.com (I just received them).
  • I don't want the extra wires that come with general purpose harnesses.
  • Getting wire, connectors, looms, and heat shrink tubing in bulk is cheap.
  • Prewired harnesses are way expensive. I think the vendors take advantage of us like with that ridiculously overpriced $69 "ignition bypass" kit, clearly cobbled together from readily available parts for a few bucks.
  • I plan to toss my (uncut) original harness in the original parts box in case I ever want to sell the car (or my heirs do!) and the customer really wants it all original. I've done a lot of upgrades on the car, but I keep the old stuff I pull off for that reason.
  • I find it enjoyable and relaxing to string wire.
  • I worked as an electronics tech to pay my way through college, so I know how to do professional quality work.
  • Electrical stuff doesn't intimidate me in the least. While I'm a complete loser at metal & paint work (I cannot drill a hole straight to save my life), old car electrical systems are easy for me.
  • I frankly think it will be as much or more work trying to make a standard harness work.
  • I thought it would be more fun  :stirpot:

I used the Painless Wiring Mopar Harness, #10127.  It came out GREAT.  It was easy to work with, everything was labeled.

There is my past post on the subject.

I made my own gauge cluster, so I had to mix and match some wire colors and such.  Nothing to serious.

I have installed both , no real preference , both are very similar & use GM wiring colors , the block my be a slight advantage for you but I had no issues with the painless with the attached block , my choice would be price not quality

The new Painless Mopar one is wired in the mopar style, with the same mopar colors.

I've done several harnesses from several companies and have had the best results with painless and that was before they came out with their new mopar harness. I have been in talks with them for a while because I am planning on installing a 6.1 hemi in my challenger and they feel confident that their new harness will work great.
