Power steering box?'s
« on: February 04, 2008 - 04:30:18 PM »
Ok, in my search for a Rebuilt PS box I've found that the 72 box is different from a 74 in some way.  The 74 is readily(locally) available but the 72 isn't.  I tried Napa, Autozone, Advance(partsamerica),VIP and Pep boys.  No luck from any of these on a 72 box.  What do I need for the swap to a 74 box, just a Pitman arm?  I have found that the Shaft size is different on the 2 using specs online.

Just want to confirm before I order it.

the idler arm reverses , it is above the center link pointing down until 72 when it switched over to the longer arm that reaches under the center link & points up , I do know the slpine changed size but I AM UNCLEAR ON WHAT YEAR , I THINK MANUAL & POWER ARE DIFFERENT BUT NOT IN ALL YEARS [I hate caps lock ]

The changeover must have been 73 as both of my 73's had the parts readily avalable?  One word of advise, go with a box from firm feel or steer and gear unless you want to take a chance on changing the box more than once if it dosen't work right the first time. I used a napa box at first and there is a steer and gear on the car now.

Well, I picked one up today along with the pitman arm, it was 160 bucks for both plus the core charge of 85 bucks, I haven't given the core back yet.

I hope it works, cause I can't swing the 299 for the FF + ship a core to them, just too much dough.  Starting to get out of hand as it is.LOL

The box looks good except for being Blue.  I'll have to spray it black...

Thanks  Tom  :dunno:

What year box did you ask for.  From what I've read all years fit but the pitman arm changed around 72-73? :dunno:

I ordered a box from 74 and a pitman arm to match, these things are tapered right?

My pitman arm goes on easy till about 1/2 way then it's tight, so I'm guessing the nut pushes it the rest of the way on.  At least I hope so.LOL
