    Ok, so maybe someone here can help me out. My g/f has a '71 Ford f100 4x4 with a 390 BB and a 4" lift installed by a PO (yes, its her truck). The PO also installed a custom made power steering conversion, and I have NO idea what the steering box came out of. Its worn out, and I need to replace it, but first I have to know what it is so I can find another! Its a Saginaw box, #'s on it are 7809253. Here's a pic too. I've posted a few other places too, so far no luck. Anybody?

    Have you tried the auto parts stores to see if they can come up with something from the number?

    From the input splines and the mounting, it looks very like a unit from a Chevy/GMC Suburban. Start there, and flog your parts guy for not knowing where the catalog is! Tell him to step away from the computer screen, and open a book. Dimensions and other pertinent information can be found there.

    Saginaw was/is a division of GM.

    My other passion besides e-body muscle cars is chevy, gmc trucks and I have to admitt it does look like one of those units. I am restoring a 1970 chevy truck right now and it looks just like the unit that came off of it. If I was at home instead of work I could compare my unit to the one in the pic. Also have to agree that you need to go to another parts store. Any parts store that is worth its salt should have reference books going off of parts and not vehicles. If the only thing they have is a computer than walk away. I was at a standard auto and it was unreal the amount of old parts books they had. Just last week we were able to discover what year, size, etc.. cadillac engine I had, that a previous owner had put into a 1956 chevy truck. We were only able to figure it out by looking up parts by their brand and number in those old crusty books that were along the back wall; NOT BY THE COMPUTER.

    Yeah, the parts store is not the best ever. But I've been to a couple now. The problem with the books is someone has to know how to use them too! Used to be the problem with the computers, now its the other way around. The Riebes I just went to had a crap load of books, but they never opened 'em.  :grinno:

    There are a couple of things that are a little goofy about the box. It actually bolts to the plate in that picture, not the framerail, so it was originally designed to be on the inside of the framerail (of whatever it came off of). Also, the output shaft is really long, and all of the mounting tabs are actually on the output shaft housing. It actually looks a lot like a Ford power steering box, except the mounting is backwards, and so is the bolt pattern.

    I'm still looking. I've got threads on a couple of truck forums, maybe I'll get lucky. I'd just replace it with something else if I didn't have to mess with the rest of the steering set up too (also custom).

    Its close, definitely in the right ballpark. But if you can wrap your head around the upside down picture ( :bricks1:) the mounting bolts aren't in the right place (this one would be 2 in front, 1 in back, vs the opposite on mine. Also, I'm not sure if its the splines, but the input shaft is slightly larger than 3/4". I have a Ford steering shaft that doesn't fit it, in addition to the spline count being off the input shaft is actually just ever so slightly bigger. Hmmm. Maybe its metric? This is really kind of irritating. Every box I find that looks close is just reversed in one way or another, if the bolt pattern matches, the output shaft is on the wrong side of the box. If the output shaft matches, the bolt pattern doesn't. It also closely resembles an early Ford Bronco case, but the output shaft is on the wrong side of the body of that one. Its almost identical to a Corvette manual box  :clueless: , but they didn't come with power until they had rack and pinion.

    I appreciate all the help guys, I am going to figure this out eventually!

    the way I found them was go to the Parts Pro SE Catalogue, search P/S Box & then in the Sort By drop down menu select PART NUMBER #.. 24 pages of boxes & seal kits... boxes start on page 5

    Well that works! Ugh, there's a few that are close, and I think I have a handle on their part # system. Maybe I can try a couple variations and head over to my local Napa...
