I've rebuilt a 360 10:1, full roller, compcams extreme energy xe284h(www.compcams.com/Technical/Search/CamDetails.asp?PartNumber=20-225-4), Rebuilt edelbrock performer 750,edelbrock performer air gap intake,msd all in 1 distributor,ported x heads. 1st problem is that the first header bolt on the driver side seems stripped. Can I use a heli coil (water jacket) or am I screwed.2nd problem is that the motor is hard to start and when I get it started it dies un less I keep on the gas.lots of black smoke out exhaust.There is also lots of black unburnt fuel comming (spraying out) the exhaust and leaky header. Can  a factory spec carb be that rich(fouled plugs) or is something else very wrong.Cant set timming or check vacum cause cant keep the car running.Maybe vacum is too low and causing flooding?Thank you.

if your getting that much raw gas..."spraying out" I would guess that the floats are stuck open & fuel pouring in faster than it can be burned.

what type of carb , have you checked float levels etc , usually these are off as shipping willl change the settings , just doing a basic tune of th ecarb should solve the issue
 A time-sert is a better solution to the stripped head bolt  , as anti freeze will often seep past the threads in a Helicoil

ok I found time-serts, but will they be hard to get (in canada) or couldn't I use a heli coil with teflon inside and out

You would have to seal the whole Helicoil inside & out with some great thread sealer , the time sert will not leak past the threads
 You will have to remove the top of the carb , clean the needles & seats out & set the float levels , I have seen a Eddy carb with a whole wall missed in the casting process & it still got past QC so look for other problems inside

Thanks for the help. My dad was all worried about the carb so he just turned around and bought a new one. Car seems to run ok. I agree with the floats and needles on the old carb, but my dad was anxious cause we got a car show in a week. As for the header bolt we got a set of arp and now it seems fine. By the way copper gaskets suck, felpro composites are the way to go.
