Wait, does that pump warm air through the speaker covers?  I'm really not familiar with the rear defrosters on these cars...

Jeff,

The defogger takes the place of the right speaker in most applications. Typically the car came with the good old Music Master AM radio. A long name for making you think there was something great about listening to AM with a front and rear speaker and a fader. It sounded just like a HD radio.

In some cases where a FM stereo radio was ordered and a rear defogger together, a potmetal housing was used to accommodate both options. With either option, the blower motor exhaust went into a tube that connected to a diffuser under the center of the package tray. Above that on the interior side, a bezel was bolted through the package tray connecting the bezel and diffuser. The heating resistor coil on the motor housing provided the heat. On earlier late sixties units, there was no heating resistor coil. Only cold air blew on the rear window.

On the non A/C heater boxes, the same heater element was used to "pre-heat" the front passenger area.
The part number for this resistor coil is 2521409 and was used on the rear defoggers and the front non A/C heater boxes.

Hemiken has posted a beautifull example of a passenger side rear speaker/defogger device that clearly shows both mounted together. I didn't see it until just now.
