Repro carpet recommendations and question
« on: January 29, 2008 - 07:11:21 AM »
Need black carpet for a 70 Barracuda - which company has a decent product that also covers the retractable lap belt humps as i think these were a 70 only item?

Still want to confirm the the seatbelt bulges are 70 only?  How important are these in the scheme of things as I have to fit Australian Standard seatbelts regardless - was thinking baout keeping both.

Hey Mark

Yes 70 only had the belts consealed under the carpet in a White plastic case or housing buddy.

71 and up had the same similar system we have on our Valiants.

I did find a place in Australia that will recondition factory American belts and retag them with Australian Standards if you wanted to run original style belts.  Expensive to do but.....................

There are more than just a few things that are 70 only.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

Yeah Kenny, I've been put in touch with the same guy in Bathurst?  About $500 to have Aust Standard webbing but the aircraft-style buckles won't pass engineering here.  Thought about it but engineer I spoke to today thought that have two sets of belts in the car at once wouldn't get passed (I was thinking about retaining the humps and retractors as well as having new belts fitted behind them).

Hey Mark,

Can you forward those Bathurst details on to me please.  I will ring him and have a chat,  I know a few people in Bathurst you may know the people who do the seat belts.  I will check and get back to you.  My brother and i are going to push real hard to get the American buckles pushed through as legal belts.

New belts mounted behind would be a whole lot of work buddy as you would have to fit burst through plates for every ancoring point of the belts, becomes time consuming and costly if you can't do this thing yourself.

We will try for original belts first and go from thier buddy. :2thumbs:

Kenny.

Hardest thing about fitting new belts will be getting the inretia-reel retractors to work properly :pullinghair:  To belts I need to add one extra mount point on each side for the retractor assemblies which is mainly drilling a whole and adding backing plates which I bought from Klippan with the belts.  NOt planning to weld them on, just run an inner and outer bead of sikaflex and a helping hand to make sure they don't spin when torquing up the bolts (which might be harder than I thought come to think of it).  Existing mount points from the original seatbelts for the other two mount locations.  Will email you the details of the guy in Bathurst Kenny.

The belt question is a problem here in Australia, from my inquiries the only real difference between Americian seat belts and Australian belts is the Australian belts are soaked 'in a bucket of water' and then retested. Its a shame as the Americian belts are definetly better than the 'Kangol' magnetic belts that were legal and fitted to our 70's Valiants.   :stomp:
My 70 VG Pacer which I bought new kept coming undone to the point I adapted retractable and chucked the magnetic ones. So much for Australian standards and their testing.   :faint:
My '70 Challenger has the original retractable belts and I won't be chucking them.   :2thumbs:
I'll do what it takes to register...........

:clapping: I am on the job, my brother and i want to run the original belts aswell as his 70 Challenger SE has the rare C15 seat belt code and it would be a shame not to run them.

I have some crapy original belts in my VE wagon and they even let me race with them. :faint:
