One hell of a classic car stereo
« on: December 20, 2007 - 09:57:27 AM »
While looking for the right headunit to put in my Challenger, i stumbled across this one: The Becker Mexico. It has the classic looks of the late 60s and combines it with state of the art technology. Awesome. It even has navigation and mp3 support. Ok, it's a bit costy at almost 2k US, but i haven't seen anything better so far. I just wonder if it would be a bit TOO classic looking for the Challenger. I mean, it would fit perfectly in an elegegant Cadillac from the 50s, but for a musclecar, it's almost not mean and sleek enough. What do you think?

That is a great looking old school radio.  That'd look good in any musclecar.  And yes, 2K is a bit pricey.

I don`t know about radio styling in us cars late 60`s early 70`s, but this design was used in european cars, like bmw ,benz,ao. till say mid seventies, so it should fit perfect in a 1970 car...I love the looks.
if you are interested I could try to find out what the radio costs overhere. Might be cheaper...maybe not...

Just read the specs on the bad boy.

Card Reader
The Becker Mexico card reader lets you play MP3 files from CF / SD / MMC card or microdrive. Touch a button and tiny panel above the display lowers to reveal the card slot.

Bluetooth® Wireless Technology
The Becker Mexico supports Bluetooth® SIM Access Profile (SAP) technology. Now you can transfer SIM card data from a Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone to your Becker Mexico. Leave your mobile in your pocket and make phone calls via the radio and exterior antenna. Address and telephone data can also be exchanged between mobile phone and navigation unit via Bluetooth®. Your Becker Mexico also supports mobile phones equipped with Bluetooth® Handsfree Profile Version 1.0 or higher (Some functions may be phone-dependant.)

Speech Dialogue System
With many pre-programmed voice commands and 50 learnable commands for the tuner, operating your Becker Mexico is amazingly easy. Speech control in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or US English.

2K is still a lot, but man..............

IMO would look OK in a 60's Chevy but not ebody style at all...at 2Gs no way, at most you can get a good brand with those features for under $500.     Here's a cheepie I saw that kinda reminds me of the 2-knob AM that came in my '73.....notice no CD completely electronic.

a nice looking well equiped Kenwood that I would consider if buying today $399

Not for My E-Body.  Just does not look like the one that came in the car at all.  I will wait for a one that looks the same or just use the one that came in the car.  Don't need a radio anyway for me to drive my car.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

This one was 150 bucks, i liked it cause it's all black(mostly) and blends in.  Plus it has an IPOD cable built in and it(IPOD) can be controlled from the front of the Deck.

Plus that one says "Mexico" on the front...... :roflsmiley:

It wouldn't be for me. I like the cheap plastic look of the original radio. I'm looking in to modernizing the guts of it while keeping the original face.

My style is to have the thing look bone stock and kinda rough, yet underneath, hidden away, it's all modern technology.

Personally I think it looks like  :poopoke:

Reminds me of the dirt cheap Kraco's you'd see in old beaters back in the day, the word "Mexico" is just icing on the cake! :roflsmiley:

I like the idea of all the features but would prefer they be built behind a factory correct radio front, I've had several converted that way and they are awesome, look stock, sound WAY better than stock. But I'll admit, nothing near the features offered by that "Mexico" deal...However features I'd gladly give up NOT up not to have that butt ugly unit in my car.  :2cents:

Yeah, I have a new style CD player too. But I would be interested in one that looked like the original but played Cds and was ipod adaptable.  That would be cool.  :2thumbs:

Becker was the OEM supplier of M-B for years. Being in the automotive field I have seen more than my fair share of old Mercedes with Becker radios in them. That being said I think that would look very out of place in our cars or any american car for that matter. Just my 2 cents.

back in the day, I left my factory AM radio in the dash connected to the dash middle speaker.  I then mounted an amp to the top side of the am radio (hidden) with cassette player in the glove box out of site out of mind with speakers in the rear package shelf.  I suspect I will do something similar again, or look into either modernizing the factory radio or mounting a remote CD unit in the trunk
