They are mistaken. If you look at the vin tag it reads JH23HO, the H in the second spot would have to be a S to be a R/T car. That car is an A66 car.

In 1971, because of fuel and insurance, you could get a 340 in the R/T as a no cost option.

I had a 1970 that came from the factory that had the R/T emblems on it and it was a 340 car with the same badging as that one but with all of the r/t emblems on it.  Gaylon could not say that it was made or not.  I have witnesses that will tell you that it came from then factory that way.  So was it a true R/T maybe not but it was from the factory. One thing I know about that era is to never say never it came that way from the factory.  build sheets are good, fender tags are good but that may not have been the way it came.  Things were changed per customer requests.  If you knew someone on the line you could get things changed or upgraded so may it be.  I was there and i saw it happen.  I recieved the vehicles off the truck and cleaned them.  I saw them first hand.

That's good to know Gordon, I have wondered if there was a possibility the factory installed them as I didn't buy it new. I was 3rd owner so though maybe one of the previous owners added the badges. There has been a bit of hearsay about the A66 coming with factory R/T emblems but you are the first to confirm it. :clapping:

I have a (way-out) idea why mine has the R/T badges on the fenders but not the trunk or grille. Suppose the fender badges are the bolt on type that would require the fenders to be predrilled. If drilled fenders are coming down the line and you have an H car with a 340 what do you do. Add the badges to cover the holes.  :dunno:

I personally talked with Gaylon on the car that I had.  I talked to him a long time.  My car was a JH and not a JS like the 71.  He said he could not confirm it nor could he say that it was never built that way or came that way.  What you are saying could very well have been the case.  I personally worked on one car that came from the factory the incorrect color, was badged on one side with Dart and the other Valiant on it.  They did not even sand the car before it was painted.  I was working in the cleanup department at the time.  I put high pressure wash on it and the paint came off in big chunks.  What a suprise that was.  When the owner checked it in he did not even notice the badging being wrong.  I pointed that out to him.  It was a sold car.  We had to repaint it like it should have came from the factory.  The Car was white and they sprayed forest green on it because it was a sold car.

Just to set the record straight on 71 340 RT cars the 340 engine was a option that did cost more than the base 383 and here is my window sticker with the 340 and price next to it. A big $44.35 got you the 340 4-barrel engine.

if there is no documentation on a build sheet after all these years, then i myself have to wait and see proof before I agree with them coming with badges. It's only talk untill you see the codes. I to say never say never.  But it's just like finding a bb e body after 71.  Gotta see it with the documents. If someone on the line stuck something on a car that didnt belong then that's what you got. If that car was to be completly restored today, the badges would come off unless it said different on the build sheet or fender tag.  Just the way it is.

I bet the car was damaged at the factory and fixed there. That happened a lot pre 1980.
