Alternator ID Help
« on: January 27, 2008 - 10:00:54 AM »
I'm trying to restore the original alt for my 70 Cuda. That part is no problem. What I am having a problem with is finding the part #. I have found plenty of casting numbers and date codes. Where is the # for the whole alt located? Does anybody have a picture? I could also use a picture of a 69 date wheel stamping. Mine is very light and the 9 could be a 4 or something else .

OK then, how about this?

There seems to be 2 styles of alt produced in the late 60's - 1970. One has 3 contacts, output, field and a floating ground in an insulated brush holder. The other has 2 contacts as the ground (brush) is grounded by its mounting screw and has no spade lug.

Is the difference simply between the solid state voltage regulator type and the mechanical voltage regulator type?

Ok I feel like talking to my self.

I think that my statement about the number of contacts on the alt (2 or 3) is correct.

I have found in print the statement that pre-1970 alt might not have a part # (just casting #s).

So for an early 70 Cuda with a 69 in the date wheel, is an alt with no part # correct?
