  OK, be kind to me.
  Why, oh why, do these gear shift plates pit? They are inside the car. No rain or road salt to mess with them. Yet... all the ones I see for sale are like mine or worse. Any ideas? Thanks.

Heat, age and from everyday wear & tear. Plus it doesn't help that there coated like crap. Chryslers to worried about making powerful cars, not fussed on making the interior as tuff as there engines. For instance, the console cracks, the peeling dash, etc etc

Well, I know mine had dried soda all around it and some candy stuck to it.  They probably take more abuse from passengers then the outside takes from the elements.
