Carrier Help, quick please.....
« on: February 27, 2008 - 01:23:29 PM »
I've got a 489 case with an open carrier and 2.76 gears in it.  I recently bought a 741 case with a suregrip (clutch style) carrier and 3.23's in it.  I took it to a shop to have the carriers swaped and a new set of 3.91's put in it.  I just got a call from the guy and he said the bearing kit that I gave him was way too big for the carrier.  :clueless:

So my question is: are all carriers interchangable, regardless of what case they came out of?

Did I order the wrong kit from summit?

I need help with this asap as the guy has my pig all apart and is wondering what I want to do with it.

Thanks!!!   :2thumbs:

Please don't take offense if this is a stupid question, but is your plan to put the posi unit into the 489 case, or rebuild the 741?  I am assuming you are re-using the 489.  With that said, are you sure the 3.91 gear set is for the correct carrier?

You're correct....I'm rebuilding my 489 with the posi unit from the 741.  The 3.91 gear set is for a 489 case.

I just got off the phone with Mopar Performance (1.888.528.4364) and they said all carriers are interchangable.  The Race bearings may be different for each carrier though....so he said I will probably need the race bearings for a 741 case for that suregrip to fit in my 489 case.   :faint:  I had NO idea about this..... :banghead:

The guy ran some numbers on the carrier that I have and turns out that it's from a 65-68.....which I'm most positive won't work in my case.... :faint:

He also said the nut that came off the pinion gear originally is too small for the new set of gears I bought!!  :faint:  do they just sell the nuts for the pinion gears???

I had the same problem with the pinion nut on another build I did, are there any 4x4 or diff shops in your area? they should be able to get (or have on hand) a pinion nut
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

there are a couple of 4x4 shops that I can call......ugh.....I had no idea this many things could go wrong.....I'll have to call and see if any of them have one....biggest problem is, I don't know what size the nut is.... :clueless:
