.92 Torsion Bars
« on: February 12, 2008 - 10:44:31 PM »
While I'm out of work I'm doing part of the front suspension job, the part that will be cheap(er) since I've already bought most of the parts. I initially didn't think that 30 year old t-bars would have any value, but somebody told me that drag racers want the thinner bars. True? If so, any idea as to value?

Are you talking about selling your original t-bars?  0.92 is not small.

I sold my original 0.86 bars on ebay for $60, cost $22 to ship, minus the paypal and fees, cleared $30.
Not much, but better than just throwing them away.

You could be like me and be a pack rat for when someone might need them. I would guess 50 would be a good average.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Katfish - That's why I said "thinner" and not " thinnest"

Al - I've been a packrat for too many years already. I couldn't figure out when I moved into the house why it was so empty, then I realized that the garage is full to the brim

.92 is the size of bar originally used in Hemi cars, so its reasonably stout. Since new sets are $300+, you might be able to ebay them for $100 or more.

That'll teach me to rely on my memory. I thought that:

.86 mostly came in slant 6 cars
.92 mostly came in small block cars
.96 mostly came in big block cars

I kinda agree with you here.  .92 seems small for a big-block.

Ahh, you skipped a couple of sizes.

.86 six bangers
.88 small blocks
.90 big blocks
.92 hemi, six paks

Roughly. I think a/c equiped cars recieved the next size bigger. It wasn't until the post 73 B bodies with isolated suspension that bars started getting into .94, .96, and .98 sizing.

For about the last ten years or so I've been recommending .96 for small block and 1.0 for big block cars that want late model equivilent handling with a decent ride.

Well, that explains Katfish's response. Looks like I was way off.
