What is this high-pitched squeaking noise?
« on: February 27, 2008 - 01:38:22 PM »
I need to know how to quieten this squeak I have on my right front.  It's on my 74 Challenger when I brake, and it isn't consistent.  It has front disks on the front, and there is plenty of brake pad left.  Everything looks good.  Do I have to take off the calipers and put some grease behind the pads where they make contact with the caliper?  Any other possibilities?

This is a weak guess, but is there something between the pad and rotor that might be causeing this? Is the rotor smooth?

Could be dirt/debris between the pad/rotor. Could need the sliders/pins need to be cleaned up and lubricated. Are these fresh pads?

Thanks for the replies.  The rotors appear to be very smooth.  There may be something between the pad and rotors, but you don't hear it until brakes are applied.  The pads aren't new or anything, but they appear to be about 70% good.  It does look like they have not been off in a long time, but what is there is in very good shape.  Maybe they just need lubricating.  It sounds like a Volvo brake setup right now.  I may take it apart this weekend and reapply some grease.  Does the cylinder screw back in like modern day cylinders, or is there anything special I should know before taking the caliper off? Thanks again for the help!

It may be all glazed over, and it helps to bevel the edges of the pads

probably just glazed pads , sand the surface of the pads if the noise goes away it is the pads , if you push the brakes hard a few times often they will stop squealing as well
