3 speed to 4 speed conversion......
« on: February 25, 2008 - 10:27:39 PM »
Ok, I am getting ready to swap out my 3 speed with a 833 4 speed. My question is what do I need to do this, parts wise? I have never done this before and I need to get the old trans out and the new one in on the same day, as the car must be mobile right away. Here is what I have: the 833 trans, rods, shifter plate, shifter mech, new pilot bearing, etc. Can the z-bar, trans mount, bellhousing, and clutch be used off the 3 speed or do I have to buy all new stuff? The car has to be mobile because it is sitting in my paint booth right now and with spring coming, I will be painting alot of cars for other people of course.

Z bar , trans mount can be used , the  bell  maybe depending on the front retainer diameter for both the trans & bell , the clutch should work if the 3 spd uses the 23 spline X 1" diameter shaft

I forgot to mention that I am switching to a 440 big block. So now will the z-bar be the same? How about everything else?

The Z-bars that I have used were all the same length. The only difference I had was where the arm ,that links the adjuster rod to the clutch fork hole, was welded about 1/2" over.  You cane either cut yours and weld it on the new spot or buy the angled adjuster rod from BREWERS Performance.  That angled rod can be used when going from big blick to small block or vice-versa. Call Brewers and tell them what you are doing.
