Newer wiper motor wire connections
« on: February 25, 2008 - 01:19:06 PM »
I put a NOS 3 spd wiper motor for an Aspen or someting in my '70 Challenger and it fits and looks great but won't shut off properly. I had to change the plug in to match my car so I matched the colors just like they were on the old motor, the wipers work but when I shut them off they go into park and keep humming and drawing juice. anyone ever done this before? I'm guessing two of the wires are color coded different but I have no idea what combination to use.

I'l give it a try.  We put a later 3-speed/variable speed wiper motor into a 70 Challenger and it involved switching some wires and it works fine, but I think your motor might have different color wires.
If you have a motor with the plastic park mechanism and two soldered terminals on front, the single (blue, on ours) wire goes from the one-wire terminal closest to the motor "can" to the upper right bulkhead position--the one with the funny shaped corner.  The other three wires are coming out of the can and they go as follows:
green- under the blue, bottom right
brown- next to the blue, top left
red- under the brown, next to the green, bottom left

I haven't pulled the later wiper motors apart, but on the '70 style, with the flat (red-wax) style, that single-wire terminal on front goes to a little contact switch that, after the motor has reversed and parks the blades, is pushed open and turns things off, so I'm wondering if that is working properly.  By the way, it won't work right if the switch isn't grounded, so if you have things apart on the dash and the switch is just hanging there, clip a little ground wire to it.
Let us know how you're doing with this.  Good luck

You kind of lost me there but it sounds like we're talking about the same motor, it has a dark platic cover rather than the red goop. it's NOS right out of the box so I think the motor is ok. my original motor worked fine I just changed it because of looks so it just about has to be in those 4 wires.

When you're talking about the placement of the wires are you taling about their position in the plug in? the shut off switch sounds like what's different but I can't figure out how you got around that . I just matched colors up the same as they were on my original motor but spliced in the old plug in so it would fit. do you remember what colors crossed to another color or did you replace the whole pigtail?

What I was trying to say is--
starting at the black plastic parking mechanism on the front of the wiper motor, there are two soldered connections.  The connection closest to the motor winding (on the master cylinder side of the wiper motor) has a single wire coming off and the other one (closest to the heater) has two soldered wires to it.  On ours, the single wire (from the single soldered terminal) goes into the short wiper harness and terminates in the plug as the post in the funny-shaped corner of the plug.  That one happens to be blue.  The green one is below the blue one, and the brown is next to the blue one.
I'll cross my fingers

It looks as if I'm wired the same as yours, so it must be in the park shut off switch . is that adjustable or can it be disabled so just the swithch will shut it off? I never intend to be caught in the rain anyway but if I do I can just plug my wipers in and they work but I'd just like to fix it if I can.  thanks for your help
