wil my '76 distributor work in my 440
« on: April 07, 2008 - 10:53:33 AM »
I bought a 1976 440 that I was told came out of a station wagon, and it's distributor has 2 sets of wires comming out of it.  We are thinking that one set is for power, and we're guessing the other may have gone to a computer.  Did 440s have computers in them in '76?  Can I use this distributor, or will I have to buy a new one?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Pat

it is a electronic ign dist , similar to the new Mopar performance ones but with a different advance curve , in 76 Mopar was already using electronic ign so you can just plug it into the harness for the electronic & use the factory style ECU or up grade to the orabge or chrome ECU from Mopar . Neither of the wores is power , it is simple a in & out circuit from the ECU so it can read the signal from the pick up coil .... bottom line is yes you can use it

Can you post a picture of the distributor? Does it have a vacuum advance on it?
Just curious

It could be a "lean burn" distributor which was an early and problematic attempt at computer controlled ignition.  If that is the case, I would ditch it and swap in a "normal" distributor.  It would probably work, but the ignition curve could be so messed up I don't think it would be worthwhile.  It really is hard to beat the mopar performance kits for price and simplicity. :2cents:
