a833 or a833OD? Poll

My tranny guy,which is a mopar guy as well,said he doesn't like the gear spread on the overdrive 833.I wanted to get some opinons of those that have driven both.I know it will also depend on what gears you are running and i will probably mostly use 323 but have a 411 pumpkin when i want to have fun,probably wont be in there most of the time

I love the OD tranny.  It's almost a direct bolt in, turn down the input bearing retainer on a lathe and it fit any Chrysler bellhousing.  I've put this tranny in A, B and E bodies now, both slant sixes, 383s, and 440s, and love it.

The A-833 OD tranny has almost the exact same gear spread as the uber-popular GM 700r-4.

Who doesn't like a better gearing for acceleration in first (3.09 first gear vs 2.66), and chopping 25% off your RPM in 4th gear (.76 vs 1.0)?  That means less wear on your engine, more mileage, or more top speed depending on what kind of animal you are. 

On my Challenger with 3.91s in 4th this tranny allowed me to go from 100 MPH @ 5000 RPM to 133 MPH @ 5000 RPM.

Only reason I'd see not to put it into something if you are doing one of those super-mega restos, or you want a close ratio tranny for autocross or road racing.

I like my car the way it was in 1970. a 266 first gear is ok with me .  For cruising down the hi wy the od would be great, but, the tq of a bb doesnt really need a 309 first gear.  My car was built for being a muscle car, local street pounder from the factory, not a fuel saver to go on long trips. The od is a good thing, but many wont drive their cars all over the country for fear of wrecking it, or it getting weather damaged or orther reasons. I'll stay with original equipment and enjoy the local fun as intended. But I already read this post a month ago, so I know the od will get the most responses :bigsmile:
