Shift-R-gate is for forward pattern VB. It sort of converts a non-slap-stick to a slap-stick. It's marginally effective... at least the one I purchased several years ago for my 69 Charger was. Don't know if the design has been improved upon since.

Thnaks magnum....they make a reverse valve shifter gate too i see on there site....my car is already a slapstick...i was just wonderin if the shifter gate was an improvement...or basically the same thing i have from the factory....when i shift mine which again is reversed...i sometimes slip from 1st to 3rd....accidentally...its easy to do in mine...maybe my slapstick isnt right? or broke...ive never owned another so i wouldnt know anydifferent ...would like just a more positive shift, or where i cant short shift it.....

I don't get in my car regularly but if you don't push the button, you should only go from 1 to 2 gear, not into 3rd if your shifter is working properly... I think.

The Chrysler Slap Stick is pretty much the best automatic shifter available back then from the factory.  If I was still running my automatic, I would not have done anything to change it.  If you're having problems with yours, then it is something in the mechanism, as opposed to the nature of the shifter itself.

yeah chally thats what im thinkin....do u think it has anythign to do with it being reveresed vb....and its the sequence of the shift...as far as why it can go from 1 to 2 in one swift motion.......i would think there should be a stop there...so that wouldnt happen....any suggestions would be great.... :clapping:

the slap stick works coming from low to 2nd to 3rd,,but if yours is set up as a reverse valve body and your shifting down to first on the shifter to get 3rd it wont work as the shifter is set up to do it in a forward motion not back

Yes Rt, I thought that may be the reason...its just not set up for that....i bought the car that way with teh rev vb.....I really wonder why anyone would want the vb to be in reverse anyway....its just so easy to slip it into high gear that way....thats alot of lost races!..lol.....guess i could always change it to a full manual reg shift vb huh.....thanks everyone for the input...this site is very helpful and everyone extremely cool on here...... :cooldancing:

The Chrysler Slap Stick is pretty much the best automatic shifter available back then from the factory.

A little off topic but another cool shifter was found in some 2nd gen Trans Ams.  My sister had an '81 Trans Am and had a ratchet shifter in it from the factory, similar in action to a Slap Stik.  It wasn't label like a Slap Stik to show you it was there except for an elongated hole on the plastic dust shield that moved with the shifter.  When you drop it in 1st gear, you push it to the right about 1/2" and it would only ratchet up 1 gear at a time without hitting the shifter button.

I thought it was pretty cool and I think it only came on WS6 models as my brother's regular '80 Turbo Trans Am did not have this type shifter nor the elongated hole in the shifter dust shield.

The plate you are talking about should solve your problems.  The factory slapstick is obviously set-up for a stock pattern.  It doesn't work backwards.  The plate will make your slapstick work just like the factory intended...but in reverse for a reverse valve body.

With the new plate, you should be able to put the selector in D(1st) and slam it back into 2(2nd) and have it lock.  Let up on the shefter a little and them slam it back again into 1(3rd).
