Quater panel question
« on: April 02, 2008 - 04:15:37 PM »
Last year I bought Goodmark quater skins for my Challenger and there getting close to going on the car. My question what is the best way to do skins? Should I but weld them or flange the old Q.P. and weld. I really only need from the lower body line down but I don't want to see any seams.I was thinking about ditching the skins for full quarters. Any opinions? Thanks Chuck

If your trunk extension inside is rotted out, pull the quarter. Hows the wheel lip look way up inside up above? If theres rot there, which happens alot, chances are, the inner fender is decaying now too.

A west coast originated car could get away just skinning more often than not vs. an East coast body.
if you plan to keep the car long term, do the whole quarter.   :2cents:

either way it will be easier with alot less welding to do the full quarter and alot less filler. We were faced to do the same with our cuda and we decided to go with the full quarters, more cut out work on the fulls but less finishing to do. stitch welding is very time consuming and grinding is worse yet. I did that on my wife road runner, and those are very long panels to skin. i can show the pics of the fulls we put on if you want to see them.

 :iagree:

Grinding welds drives you nuts after a while. Ears ringing after, (yes even with hearing protection) metal in your eye on a rare occasion, the dust all over. Your neighbors will thank you also for doing less grinding since the noise is so loud.

Ask me how I know.

Replace the whole darn thing with a full quarter. I just finished up doing 2 patch panels on the driver side, in front of the back wheel and behind the back wheel. What a pain in the butt. Next time i will definenlty replace the full quarter. I replaced the full quarter on the passenger side rear, earlier, and it went on real easy and welded up nicely. :pullinghair:

well that is actually light grey SEM self etch primer we used after we were done triming out the body to cover the bare metal. The picture does make it a purplely.

Does it need cleaning off after or can you spray straight over it..........

Chuck,
I do not need hardly any filler when I use skins.  I am not questioning Dave's ability either.  He has done a beautiful Cuda.  I wanted to make sure no one misunderstood me.  In the case of your car, from what I can see, it looks like it needs a whole quarter.  How is it where the quarter attaches to the trunk drip rails.  It looks like there is trouble in that area of the car.  Is it just the lighting?

craftsmanship is the key,
either way can be done. just need care when you stitch weld that long of a weld and to not warp the panel or over grind.
