What do you wrap your Engine Harness with?
« on: April 07, 2008 - 12:12:09 PM »
I always heard Electrical tape was wrong. I have been using Friction Tape b/c that looks close to original for me, But it has the habit of getting gummy and getting residue on the paint under the hood. Is there something better out there?

I'm using this kind of cable "cover" :
https://www1.elfa.se/data1/wwwroot/webroot/Z_DATA/fba1ba80-797f-11dc-9199-0019bbdf5d02.pdf

It's pretty much same kind of stuff that the factory used on the rear wire assemblies, only difference is that the original was somekind of fabric and this stuff is plastic.

Only problem is that you need to remove contacts from either end to install it and this still needs some taping where the wires separate from the main "bunch".

It isn't a big problem for me because I'm replacing all engine wires and only keeping the plastic housings. I even accuired few bags terminals used in these wires.

I've also heard good things about 3M super 88 (or something like that) tape which is somewhat more expensive than the chinese tapes in the market and this one should be resistant to oils.

There is a non-adhesive vinyl tape made for harnesses, I have some. I'll look and see if it has a name brand on it. I bought it from a shop a few years ago.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

I've been looking for the non-adhesive vinyl tape but I haven't seen it around for a couple of years.  I usually use electrical tape but I bought something new today.  It's a woven tubing available in 1/4 inch diameter up.  Painless Wiring has it although I bought a no name brand.  It looks better than plastic loom.  I might not be able to use it on the existing wiring but I have added alot of new ones which could be made to look better.

This type is for the original look, but I prefer the nonadhesive vinyl only wrap for a minimum amoutn of mess down the road when having to add wiring or diagnose issues.

I used the non adhesive vinyl tape from R/T Specialties and if you ever have to find a problem in the harness you will be glad you used the non stick stuff.
