Thinking of selling my car and curious on value...
« on: April 07, 2008 - 11:49:55 AM »
The subject line tells all. I'm going thru a bit in my life, and I am considering selling my last E body. It is a '70, BH23L0 car. The unibody is currently visually rust free. I know it has some, some in the cowl, some in the dutchman and windshield/rear window surrounds, and a spot on the rear frame rail about 1x3". Car has had new trunk floors, extensions, and 1/4 skins, plus driver's floor installed. Has cracked factory dashpad, '72-74 ralleye cluster. It is more a race car than street car, has run 12.0s at 113 on race fuel witht he 440/727/4.30s 8 3/4 in it. 10x2 drums in front, 11x3 in rear, MP aluminum master, non power brakes. Mild modifications of the fire wall (filling blower motor opening, oval over brake rod hole, etc), some rust repair, and some filling and smoothing done for asthetics really. Cowl has small spots for hood pins welded in. The bigest mods are the 2x3 square tubing thru the floors for strength, and the rockers notched so 4" exh pipes can exit ahead of rear wheels. The pan is a fairly easy fix, the rockers are too, but feeling full disclosure is theonly honest way... The car has fender tag, build sheet, clear CT title, and all the body numbers match accept the door sticker (replaced the LH door due to impact years ago) dual scoop hood, '72 very rusty fenders, grille and headlight doors were being used, but I dont consider them usable as they are. Car was FE5 red and black interior, non Gran Coupe, 383 2bbl. I do not have the engine for it. Trans and rear have been replaced. rear is narrowed, but uses factory mounting points. Current driveline is 727 w/ rev pattern MVBm and brand new 3.91 clutch tyep grip, Moser Axles, brakes were done, front end was redone (car was daily drive for me in the 90s), has '70 console, Hurst Pro Stick shifter, rear mounted battery, shut off switch, electric fan, fuel systems (1 for carb, one wired but incomplete for NOS), and electric water pump drive. Manual steering (car was power steering, power brake), has 1 7/8 headers, and driveline wise is fully drivable. It has a Holley 800cfm 4150, installed 440 engine makes about 475hp on 110 leaded (12:1 with MP solid cam), 3800 stall, MSD 6AL, MSD billet distributor, etc. I have '70 buckets, belts, the heater box, and a bunch of other parts that had been removed. Car is basically ready for paint, but I parked it 8 years ago and it's been out maybe 6 times since then. I sold the glass fenders and hood 3 years ago to go back to steel and never completed it. Trunk and under hood have been completely finished in FE5, butt he under hood has a few spots that need to be addressed and will need to be refinished again. All trim and glass are good or usable. I also have a completely brand new still on stand forged crank 440 to go with it, that should make an honest 525hp on pump premium that I have over $5400. What is a car like this worth realistically. I have an idea, but I'd rather see it discussed. No opinion is wrong, so dont be shy. I dont ahve pics right now, and getting them is not easy. So lets assume I've been realistic and accurate. The cowl rot is all way inside, and would require the cap be removed, but I think it could be patched by a skilled body guy. I would also replace the 1/4s because they are skins, and the outer wheelhouses are modified to fit the skins and I frankly hate that...So let me know...
thanks in advance

 :2cents:

Tough call with no pics but I'll guess 10-15 with the 2nd engine (i'm in CA so that could vary depending on your location). Seems like any time the car isn't original/together and it's been modified for racing the prices aren't as good. If you could put it together enough so it's more complete (assuming since no photos) I think it would fetch more money.

Hope things start looking up and you can hang onto it.

I agree with the 10k - 15k range but since we're putting ourselves in a buyer's frame of mind i'd like to see a pic or three before narrowing that range down...or up.

The racing mods hurt the value, the solid unibody is a plus but it still needs bodywork and resto so I`d say the lower side of the previuos guesses~10-12k

"I also have a completely brand new still on stand forged crank 440 to go with it, that should make an honest 525hp on pump premium that I have over $5400". If possible I'd try and save the other motor since you are going to lose money on it in the sale no matter what, unless you need to use it as a bargaining chip to move the car out the door.

Hey Dave, Sorry to see you have to sell it.  Is the car near where you are now?  I'd like to take a look at it this weekend if possible.

Tom,
Yeah, it's stored where I am now. A lot of the parts are still at home, but I may try to get them to where the car is this weekend at some point. I have to go back for something else anyway.

ntstlgl1970 - I have tried to sell the engine seperate. Losing on everything is a given, but selling something I have paperwork for totalling over $5400 for $1500 to me isnt losing. It's accepting theft. And frankly, the guys that offer that are morons that I dont want to deal with any more. Why should I feel worse so another can feel better? Those are the types of guys that always go out with a group, but it's never their turn to buy a round or drive. I've been known to destroy body parts before I give them away to twits like that. I'm also known to friends for handing stuff to nice guys with no exchange of money. IE at Stafford's Swap meet (coming this weekend) I had a new Milodon gear drive, still in the plastic and box, for $375 on the table. They sell for upwards of $495 now. A guy had the stones to tell me all about his 500" Hemi powered streeet rod, that was $x and superb, and then he offers me $200. I said "Now that's just silly". He even told me he knew it's worth! The guy next to him was from Moparts, and I'd never met him, but we knew who he was thru the board. He was looking at a 14x3 drop base K&N air cleaner assembly with the Pro Flow lid... That's a $100+ used air filter assembly all day. I handed it to him and off he went. the difference? When I asked him about his interest in it, he said "Man, I'd love it. It's worth it, but I promised the wife I wouldnt buy nothin', and I got no cash I can spend..."

                                                    Thanks The Clown

The problem with selling a built engine, is that no one trusts it, so no one is willing to take a chance on it unless they know you really well, or unless there is a warranty from the builder.

Except my engines are/were warranteed, and I have a running stand to fire them. Plus, all the documentation. I'm all for being a skeptic, I am one myself, but at some point, you have to trust the papers when they all say the world is round... ya know?

Clown, the air cleaner is heading to Ty Rods unless Rumblefish buys it Saturday morning....

Well, I had a person I have some respect for take a look at the car in person. Everything has a value, and there's what one wants, what everyone says, and what that one will pay. After looking it over, and hearing it, and seeing what goes with it, the impressions of the few who have seen it in person is that it is way undervalued at $10K. So, stay tuned. I'm listing it here, and on a couple other sites to see what shakes loose....

Clown, I had a bunch of stuff going to the swap... But Joe bought nearly all of it. The up side, it will be at Stafford. The down side, he's going to get more for it than he paid...lol. Thanks for your kind words, and if there is anything I do have, or can help you with, please don't hesitate to call on me. I need to get out of working on or being around cars for a while, but there will be a few who I'll still help in any way I can when I can.
