Ignition problem
« on: April 18, 2008 - 04:45:00 PM »
Hi,

couple of newbie questions... having a problem when starting my Challenger. Every now and then when turning the key the start rotor spins like hell but not hooking up the engine. If I stop the ignition and try it again, it usually starts normally. Have I lost some gear teeth in the distributor or what could it be? Is this easy fix and what kind of spare parts I need to purchase?

Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming you mean you turn the key and the starter motor spins very quickly, but doesn't spin the engine.  If so, the problem is either with the flywheel - a chipped tooth - or a bad bendix on the starter that isn't engaging the flywheel or ring gear correctly on occasion.  If you change the starter and it still does it, the problem is a chipped or worn tooth on the flywheel and the flywheel will have to be replaced.

My best guess would be the starter is bad.  I had the exact same problem about 8 years ago.  It would engage every now and then, but most of the time it would just sound like a high-pitched wirrring sound.  Pull the starter and take it to NAPA, etc and have them test it.

If you pull the starter a lot of parts places will bench test it for free, so you'll know if it needs to be replaced.

Ooops - beat me to it

I would definitely suspect the starter first. Let's hope you don't have headers, because removing it becomes an adventure then.  :pullinghair:

you can do a quick test -Carefully- to see if the ring gear is chipped:

When you shut off the engine, it generally stops in one of 4 places on a V8

When you get the no-crank condition, with the ignition key OFF turn the engine a little bit (if you have a direct drive fan you can sometimes use that to turn the engine a little) with either a socket on the crank or grabbing the upper part of the belt where it crosses over from the alternator to the water pump pulley and pulling to move the engine a little. Try to start the car again, if it starts, it may be the ring gear. I would do this a couple of times to confirm before shooting the ring gear as the culprit.

Otherwise you will have to pull the starter (hopefully just the starter bolts are loose - seen that cause this problem before)

If you do decide to pull the starter, do so after you get the no-crank condition so you can verify there isn't a ring gear problem while the starter is out of there.

Definetly sounds like a sticking bendix, check the shaft where the bendix slides to make sure it is not scored or gouged. I always put a few drops of oil on that shaft and slide the bendix up and down before putting a starter back in even when I have replaced a trans or clutch.
