I made a tool using a heavy threaded rod, large thick washers and nuts.  It worked pretty well but probably not as well as the real thing??

I just use a hammer to drive a screwdriver through old seals and twist it to pop it out.  You could also try a screwing a sheetmetal screw into it and pulling it out with a slidehammer or pliers.

Ha ha! Thats exactly where I got that screen name from!  Yes, you need to drive them in.  You can buy a seal driver tool set from most parts stores, or find a length of pipe from a hardware store that fits the outside diameter closely.  Be really careful to not drive them in too far, or you will distort or cock the seal.
