packing wheel bearings
« on: April 25, 2008 - 11:06:49 PM »
Hey all,

I am replacing the rotors on my cuda.

What is the proper way to pack the wheel bearings?

Easy but messy............... :22yikes:

Put some grease in the palm of your left hand if you are right handed.
Now with your right hand holding the bearing on one of its edges squeeze the grease into the big end of the taper bearing as if you were Knocking on a door using pressure to squeeze the grease in.
Slowly rotate the bearing as you go, their will be grease oozing out from between the taper roller bearings as you go.

And have a clean rag handy. :2thumbs:

I always wash out the bearing first, then pack them the messy way unless they are new.

You can also buy these pretty cheap but I have found they waste grease. Best way is what has already been mentioned, good old fashioned hand packing.

:iagree:  Wash 'em out to get the old grease out and hand pack 'em with a quality wheel bearing grease.  Don't forget to get new grease seals for the rear of the rotor.

Thanks guys.

I will try the hand packing way!

I did get new seals too...just have to get that old ones out so I can get to the inner bearings!

I was assuming you would be fitting new bearings in the front.  Make sure you change the old tappered sleeve out of the hub and do not just drop in the new bearing section in the old fixed sleeve.  You will need a long drift or long punch to remove the old sleeve from behind, i find that when installing the new sleeve in position to get it all the way bedded you can use the old sleeve upside down against the new one and gently tap it home with a piece of wood in between the hammer and bearing sleeve. :2thumbs:

Not sure I follow you.

I am re using the bearigns as they look good.

Do I need to change somwthing over from the old rotors to the new ones?

He is saying if you are changing bearings, make sure th change the race as well. It is what the bearing spins on. No big deal to change and actually pretty good advice.

Ok thanks.

The new rotors come with new races already installed.
