1973 Challenger. WIW
« on: May 21, 2008 - 03:40:32 PM »
I have a 73 Challenger. It is a 318 car. I was going to restore it as a daily. I even listed it for sale here at one time. I have a situation where I need to raise some cash. I have to make a straight dollar decision on it. With the way the market is I feel I will get more out of the car in parts. I hate to part it. It is repairable and I can fix it. It does need a lot of metal work. Again this has to be a question of which way brings in the most cash. I can stretch it out over 3 months so the time factor is not an issue on parting the car. I have figured out based on current prices what it is worth in parts. Now I want to figure out what it is worth whole and I will go from there. I just got a complete header panel that needs bolted in. I also have the front valance. I can re spray it in black, which is the original color, to give it a better appearance. So keep those two things in mind on the car. It will look better if I market it. I don't see a need to do these things if I am going to part the car.
It needs all floors. It needs a trunk floor. It needs complete quarters, and outer wheel houses. The inner fenders are gone around the hinges. The front fenders aren't to bad, they have a little rust. The hood is scaly but salvageable. The trunk lid is good. The roof has pits of rust in it; none are through but some are 50% through. The cowl has some rust by the booster. The inner cowl is gone above the drivers floor. All cowl parts are repairable. The rockers need work. One trunk drip rail is bad. The doors are gone. I have 2 replacements. The original seats were stolen. It now has 1970 seats. The interior panels are salvageable. The rest of the interior needs done. It is a factory black/black a/c car with disc brakes, sway bar and 355 sure grip.
What is it worth?
Thanks,
Tod

PS. I am Challenger6pak. I am waiting for Ross to reset my password which was lost in a computer crash.

Here are a couple more pics. I wanted to add that the frame rails are overall good. There are two small holes in the rear rails which will need patched.

Boy, this is a tough one.  Not sure what to say.  Clearly it needs a bunch of work, so you'd defiintely say it is a major project.  Does it run?  It would be worth a more as a running car than as parts I would think.

It had a cast iron water pump on it. I am in the middle of coverting it over to the newer alluminum water pump. I know it moves forward and back. I have never actualy driven it.

Well Gary, I guess I have stumped everyone. I am not going to be offended if anyone thinks the car is worthless. I put the question here for an honest answer. Does anyone have a guess at what it is worth bolted together w/ a quick paint job to make it one color?
Thanks.

I'll take a guess, I would think $2-3K max as is.  It would take a lot more work on your part, but I bet you could get almost 2x that if you parted it out.  Hood looks to be in pretty good condition.

I based my guess on the interior being in pretty much the same condition as the exterior.

Thanks Katfish. The interior is like the exterior. The interior panels can be dyed and used again. Everything else is in core condition.

:iagree: The header panel, dash pad, hood, glass and console could get you to $2k  quickly is they are in good condition.

The header panel has 1 crack and no breaks. The dash pad is doing an imitation of a volcano eruption. The dash frame and dash pad frame are good. The pad has god a/c vents. The console is in great condition. It is a 4 speed console in an automatic car. Someone switched it along the way. All the glass is good. The hood needs work; but can be used.
Thanks Slotts

IMO, I dont think you are going to get more than $2500 out of it no matter which way you go. There's no use spraying it one color if you're not going to fix the rust, because that will just make people think you are trying to hide more problems. There's not a big market for core quality pieces because that's what everyone is trying to get rid of.

Save youself the hassle and just try to sell the whole thing by putting it on Craigslist. One big plus, is that it runs and moves. But I would include that if anyone wants to make offers for parts, you will put their name and offer on a list as you may be willing to part it out if you cant sell it. That way, you can make up a list of the wanted parts to determine what you might get out of them.

Thanks for the idea of the parts list. I may have to go that route if it doesn't sell as a whole.
