340....how much hp can be "easily" reached with a 340.
« on: May 11, 2008 - 11:31:09 PM »
I know the advertised hp is 275 on a 340, but how much hp can I get out of a 340 with today'S modifications available?
I'm hesitating on buyin my first cuda because it's a 340 and I'd like to get at least 350hp without paying too much.

350 hp out of a 340 is not hard, even with original iron heads. The right cam, intake and carb selection with maybe some porting on the heads and good compression will easily clear 350 hp.

With the right heads/cam/compression, you can get 450 HP easily on pump gas.

1.1hp/cubic inch (375ish) is very easy using modern machining, and a modern cam grind, with all other parts  being factory (carb, intake, ignition, etc) including exh manifolding. 1.25hp/cu inch (425) will need better intake, more compression, better ignition and bigger carb, maybe gasket match the intake ports. Over that, you need to do soemthing with the heads in terms of proting or replacement. The biggest gains are from the beter machining (which blueprints the build and uses modern theory in terms of valve jobs) and the modern cam grind.
