stupid question how do i tell if me sending unit is bad

Not a stupid question, go easy on yourself there.

I'm no pro , but this is what I do

First, pull the single blue wire off the sending unit, ground the wire, and then turn the ignition key on the gauge should go to max full right away. If it does, then pull the sending unit, and useing an omh meter check to see if you have resistance and all the way through the scale

power flows to the guage & through it down to the sender so , if you have a pulsing power at the sender wire the rest of the circuit is ok , i fthere is no power of the guage doesn`t move check for power on both sides of the guage , if there  is power only on one side the guage is the prblem , , I assume the oil & temp guages are working OK ?if so there is power from the voltage reg at least

yes oil and temp are working should i ground the wire on the sending unit the one that pushes on the connector

Yes you can do it that way or look for a pulse with a test light at the same place like neil said.
