727 Transmission Rebuild - Help!
« on: May 21, 2008 - 09:33:15 PM »
Unfortunately, after only a few hundred "easy" miles, my new 70 Challenger's 727 lost 3rd and reverse.   My "MOPAR" shop (I'm not qualified to tackle this project and know virtually nothing about transmissions) took it out and there are metal shavings all over the place -- including in the converter.   This transmission was taken from a '67 Imperial, along with its mate (a 440) and had a 6 pack added.   The shop is suggesting a mild "boost" to the hard components with the rebuild, nothing too strong -- and indicates the need for a new converter given all the metal filings throughout......  something about impossible too clean.....      and a cost in the $1,500 neighborhood.    Question:  Is this cost anywhere in the ballpark?    ???

Thanks

That sounds very high to me. What all are you getting? Stall converter, shift kit, heavy duty bands etc?

Tact.....  Yes, all that -- modestly "beefed up" is what he indicated..... and as noted above, a new converter since the other one is full of metal shavings....    He also mentioned something about the kick-down linkage with the 6 pac to ensure it didn't damage the bands...    Sorry, I'm very naive' about transmissions.    The worst thing is -- I was hoping to get it back before this weekend -- but apparently not!

Thanks for your advice.

What do they mean, the kick-down linkage with the 6 pac to ensure it didn't damage the bands? A kit is $350, 5 hours and a $100 gear. Your call.

If that is a stock converter, then it is about $600 too much.  :dunno:

Well, it sure sounded high to me..... I'm going to check in again with them tomorrow and get some better info on all they are doing....

By the way -- forgetting the rate/hour -- how many hours should it take to drop, full repair and re-install?

thanks again for your advice...

Get all the info you can and report back. :2thumbs:

It shouldn't take more than a day (8 hrs)

Those were my same problems with my first bad trans in '85. No reverse and 3rd gear in my 904.  After getting a couple of quotes, I pulled it and fixed it myself. The problem; my direct clutch had a bad piston seal in it. Very easy to fix if you want to try it yourself. It took me 2 times since I just changed the clutches and didn't have a special spring compressor to remove the locking ring. I made a tool to get it done on the second try.

Buy a gasket, seal, clutch and steels kit and we'll walk you through it.  You can flush your converter with kerosene or diesel fuel if it has a drain plug.  You can take the trans case to a quarter car wash and flush out the all of the shavings for about $1.50.  You'll save a bunch of money and learn a little about trannies.

Rob

EDIT: I read your thread again and notice that they already have your tranny apart.  I got a quote of $1200 in '85 to rebuild a 904 from AAMCO.  If they are getting you a NEW converter, and replacing all of the clutches, steels, bushings and seals, then $1500 to R & R your trans is the least you can pay for someone to do that, if you can't do it yourself. And that comes with a warranty, right?

It stinks your in vermont cause I have a 727 with a shift kit in it that I could let go real cheap.  That price does seem a little high though

Make sure to flush the cooler (radiator) and lines...   I've seen bad things happen when this gets  neglected.
