Which carb for a stock 383?
« on: May 13, 2008 - 10:55:08 AM »
There is another thread similisr to this but I did not want to hijack it.

My father will be rebuilding a 383 to stock specs to put back in a 69 Chrysler Newport 4-door.  The only difference is that he will be using a new aluminum 4-bbl intake.  The car originally got 17 mpg (highway) with the stock 2-bbl and he would like to keep that as close as possible with the new carb.

What would be the smallest carb you would suggesting to run on this setup and why?

Thanks in advance

I guess you could put a 650 on it, but just moving from a 2BBl to a 4BBl, will put a hurtin on your gas mileage. If you didn't care so much about that, then a 750 would serve you better.

Maybe a holley 600 vac sec.  Hooking up linkage for trans and stuff gets tricky when you go from 2bl to 4bl.

Thanks for the info.  I was wondering if a 600 cfm would be to small.  I think he might have a spare 600 edelbrock vac sec that needs to be rebuilt, could that work?

I do not think he is too worried about the linkage because he is pretty good at modifying stuff, but thanks for the heads up.   :2thumbs:

You mentioned rebuilt back to stock specs cept 4 bbl intake. The 600 may give him 15to20 or so more hp, 600's use less fuel then 650's. A carter 625 would be a very good choice. That is around what a factory 625 carter was and fuel mileage wasnt bad either.  And if I was going to choose a carter for a 383, I'd find a factory one off a 383 and rebuild it. The jetting would be close for all the factory settings makeing it a simple rebuild. You find these carbs very cheap and plentiful online just screaming rebuild me.

I would use a 750 , you could use a spread bore with tiny primarys though for excellent throttle response & milage
