You might want to check and besure that your volt regulator has a good ground

:iagree: The regulator is clearly not working. And yes, you are going to fry your battery.

it could be a bad diode in the alternator as well

Grounded th VR to thje frame didn`t work still at 16.8 volts I took my old wiring harness out and  cut out from the VR plug and wires put that in and I got 14.2 volts at the battery Something wrong with my brand new harness from Evans  I guess I will start cutting the tape off to see if I can find a brake somewhere

You might try a ohm meter to see if it has continuity through it, before cutting up anything. Might be the connector itself or something

Check the field voltage at the alternator.  I bet you have a voltage drop in your system.   I have had problems on both my 74 cuda and 74 dart.  I put in a relay that that is feed diectly from the battery and ensures the alternator field is getting proper voltage.  My cars both charge now at 14.5 volts instead of 15.5-16 volt.  The blue wire carrys a big load feeding the coil, ignition box and exciting the field.  I chased my problem round and round changing the voltage regulator. Cleaning the bulkhead connector. The problem could even be in the ignition switch itself.

check the alternator, i had the same problem and spewed the battery acid all over my new paint. i even replaced the alternator and found that the one that Orilieys showed as correct, was not correct and was letting the alternator operate at full field.  :villagers:

That EVAN's WIRING HARNESS IS BAD!   If you put the old harness in and get 14.2 volts (good)  and then put in the Evan's harness and get 18v (bad) what is that telling you?  The guy at EVANS is COLOR BLIND!  I had to fix 2 problems with other people's cars with brand new EVANS harness.   You better check every wire in that harness and compare it against every wire in the old one.   It's a good thing that you didn't burn down the whole car using that thing.
