    Perhaps Barry can shed some light on this engine block. This morning I was cleaning up some stuff and came across an old 340 block I had. I thought I’d get the VIN numbers off the 340 block and post it to see if anyone had a match. I’ve never checked the numbers on it and then I went Wholly Smokes that’s a T/A code. I got some brake cleaner and cleaned it again and it still looks like “OB”.

    Am I wrong that all T/A AAR engine blocks start with “OB”?  The letters look a little funny and thought the VIN numbers started a lot higher. Your can see the outline of the engine identification inset and it would indicate it’s a standard 340 and not a T/A block. I bought the block off a shaddy guy on E-BAY from MI.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    i thought the T/A blocks actually said TA on them? :clueless:

    The only thing that looks odd to me besides the fact that it does not have T/A cast into it is the "double" stamping of the first 2 digits on the vin rail.

    It's not a T/A block, all T/A blocks had it stamped in front of the number  340.

    I think the TA pilot vins were lower in number, like starting 245,  and the production TA vins were higher in number Like starting 275. Hopefully Barry will chime in.

    72 Hemi I agree that the other T/A blocks I have and have seen had T/A stamped before the the 340, I have several. From what I know the pilot number cars were lower VIN also. Don't get me wrong I always thought it was a standard 340 but the OB prefix I think was only used on the AAR T/A. Perhaps someone has double stamped the VIN pad hoping at some point to pass it off as a T/A which would be pretty stupid. I have faith in the old wise one Barry will come to the rescue.

    0 is the last digit of the model year - 1970

    B is the assembly plant for the car - Hamtramck, MI.

    From /6 to Hemi, all engines from that plant that model year would be stamped "0B".

    This engine is from a 340 Cuda, so possible VINs for the car it came out of would be either BS23H0B257758 or BS27H0B257758 (hard top or converible)

    Lots of original VIN stamps show a "double" strike very likely from the tool rebounding.
