wipers work when they want to

some times wipers work great some times not at all, what should i look for, and where at, got caught the other nightsprinkled turned wipers on they worked, it stoped so shut them off then it started again and they wouldnt work,

have you taken the wiper switch out and looked at the back to see how the connections look, or the connections at the firewall?

I had intermittent problems on my wipers when i got the car.  It turned out it was a poor ground at the motor.  The brass strap wasn't making great contact to the firewall through the little bushing.

where is this brass stap post to be.

Should be on the motor from the top of the housing to the mounting nuts(under).  I'll have to dig up a photo from my resto thread.  I do have a 2 sp wiper motor though.

It sounds to me like you have a "Park" problem. If for any reason the wipers will not return to "Park" under the hood opening than the circuit breaker that is built into the switch will trip. Depending on the quality of the switch, it may take from 30 seconds to one minute to reset. Then when you turn on the wipers again, they work. They will continue to work until you turn them off again and trip the circuit breaker again. Make sure that the wipers are returning under the hood. If you do this on a dry windshield with just the key on, you can watch your amp gauge discharge and then go to normal when the blades stop. If there is still a discharge you may then hear a click from the switch which indicates that there is a problem with the motor, linkage or gear in the motor.

  Mine was a poor ground at the dash switch, you need good grounds every where, and as said above the strap on the wiper motor needs to be there and correctly grounded.  The dash being grounded will also give better dash lights.
