How do these plugs look to you guys?
« on: May 27, 2008 - 06:44:41 PM »
I have a basically stock rebuilt 440 with an Edelbrock 750 carb.  I am hoping to get a couple of second opinions on plug color before I make any carb changes.

The spark plug in this picture has quite a few miles on it, but led a relatively good life. There's no evidence of bad tuning, carbon deposits, or of a damaged insulator. Note also that by reading the ground strap, we can see the heat range of this plug is right about where it needs to be  :2thumbs:

Thanks for the 2nd opinions!!  I thought they looked ok, but wasn't sure if they were a little lean.  I would really like to get that Edlbrock carb off there and switch to one of my old reliable Holley DPs, but I want to keep the original type air cleaner.  The Edelbrock starts easy and runs fine but I think the throttle response is weak.   :2cents:

From past experience readings two stokes plugs, that would seem a bit lean. :dunno: What situation, or RPM did you stop the motor before pulling the plugs?

I agree, Holley DP's are pretty quik on the throttle, :ylsuper: and probably use a bit more fuel. I'm running a 650 on the 340 and the response is pretty good except when the temperature gets really hot. This isn't computerized fuel injection by any means so, tuning to the weather is needed to keep it running crisp. Just another part of the experience owning a muscle car. :smokin:

The car was run at 65 mph for about 15 miles. and then about 35 mph for about two miles then shut down in my driveway.

It runs good, but I think the cam is a bit big for a stock engine with stock converter as the idle quality and low end isn't what it should be, but the roll on power is good.  It is hard for me to judge since all my Mopars used to have headers, ported heads, a 750-850 DP and the .509 cam with the Hemi converter.  I know - I am old.
I wish I knew what the cam and compression specs were.  It barely has 700 miles on the restoration and rebuild so I hesitate to get too far into it.  Besides, I told my wife this one was for family cruising. :dunno:

you can stick a small piece of wire into the idle bleeds & or drill a small small hole approx 1/16-1/8 " in the primary throttle blades to help the idle quality

Thanks Chryco.  I might try restricting the idle bleeds a bit.
