OIL RATING FOR FLAT TAPPET CAM SHAFTS
« on: June 04, 2008 - 09:05:39 PM »
Does anyone know the oil rating required to run flat tappet camshafts.  I think it is CI4 that has the appropriate amount of zinc in the oil for cams.

Thanks

This is a widely discussed topic in many car forums.  I don't recall any deep technical discussions in this forum.  I can't remember what ratings have sufficient zinc and phosphorous but you need to look for 1200 ppm+ of each according to some of the experts.  Some folks recommend adding wear or break-in additives to increase the levels of these components.  The Zn and P are also referred to as ZDDP.  Some of the boutique synthetic and dino oils have them as do some of the motorcycle oils.  I run a roller cam so it is not an issue.

I used Diesel 15W-40 as this oil still has Phosphorous and zinc in it and no detergent. I believe the rating was SJ on the can that you should look for. I also ran the GM EOS to break my solid flat tappet cam with no problems at all. Will keep using the diesel oil c/w the EOS as the car will only be run in the warmer months. I have enough EOS for 10 oil changes.
