Where does a 727 leak from?

My 727 started leaking a couple months ago. It is leaking from the front part, what seals are common to leak?

from where the torque converter is? could be the front pump seal. dipstick can leak, pan, shifter or kickdown seals.

I had my torque converter seal go halfway to Carlisle a few years back. What a nice smoke screen for anyone behind me.   

It will only get worse if that is the case. Rebuild time.  Red fluid flipping op on my rear bumper was another clue.

Not really rebuild time, the front pump seal can be changed but the trans needs to come out. atleast my 904 is that way..

Clean the trans off with some brake cleaner or something, make sure the fluid level is correct and let the car run, but don't drive it anywhere. Then take a look and see if you can tell where it is coming from. ATF is thin enough that in the course of driving, it will blow all over the place and make it hard to find the source of the leak. Common sources are the pan gasket, dipstick tube seal, shift shaft seal (real common) and the front pump seal (which usually means the front pump bushing is worn out too)

Make sure its atleast running in neutral since the pump doesnt pump in park.

It is leaking from the frontal area and that is all I can tell. I hope it isn't a seal that requires removing the trans. Could I use carb cleaner instead to clean it?

Yeah you can, but if your inspection cover is off, you may see red behind the converter if you look close. Hope you dont though

The front seals on Torqueflites don't leak by their selves unless they are 20 years old. If you have a leak out the bellhousing,check the converter hub for cracks/wear,worn pump bushing,porosity in the case,leaking converter weld or a hardened rubber pump "O" ring.

Thanks, I will check that. This car only leaked motor oil, then all of a sudden it stopped leaking oil and started leaking ATF. It leaks about 1 tablespoon every 3 days.

does it drip while idling in neutral or just when it sits overnight etc.

I've always had fluid leaking from behind the inspection plate...had the tranny out 2 different times for rebuild and always had the leak after reinstalling...if it stopped leaking I would start getting worried.  Resigned myself to the fact that it will always be there no matter what I do.

One other place in the bellhousing is the pipe plug for the intermediate servo apply arm pivot shaft. Sometimes people overtighten these and crack the case.
