440source balancer not fitting
« on: June 15, 2008 - 12:35:37 PM »
I had to buy a new balancer so I picked up a 440source unit, black factory apearing sfi approved, and it apears to be not going on far enough. I have about .10 of tha balancer sticking out past the crank and sure enough the pulleys would be out. I have about 7/8of an inch of depth inside the front cover and the balancerhub is about 1 7/32 long. I,m also running 440's billet roller chain and gears and oil slinger by the way. I had to tap the gear on all the way and was sure I put the oil slinger on right :clueless:flush up against the gear. Do I need tohavesome material cut off the balancer or what? Logic says I either screwd up orwas shipped bad parts. :banghead:

Ok so after some more measuring and a little dremel work, the balancer goes on and off easier but still seams to bottom out early, leaving about 0.13-.015 of balancer sticking out past the crank. I have about a 1/3" (.30) of space between balancer and cover BTW.( I know this was talked about before but a search didnt help :dunno:) There is 1.70" of crank snout(from oil slinger to tip) and a total balancer lenth of about 1.85.  ???

No chryco I don't have the stock balancer, never got it back from machine shop. I'm using the PROFORM unit from MANCINCI, seems to work nice.

I'm not sure if this will help, but a somewhat similar thing happened to me.  By 'PROFORM unit', I assume you mean their balancer installer, right?  If so, that's great.  I underestimated the benefit of a balancer installer!

My balancer (Summit) did not seem to go on all the way, despite me greasing it, heating it, pounding it...  I got some good advice from my machine shop.  If your oil pan is off, you can reach in there and feel the oil slinger.  You can slightly 'wiggle' it with your finger, and keep installing the balancer, until you feel it contact the slinger. (When it contacts, the slinger won't move anymore).  At that point, you know it is on far enough.

If that balancer is that hard to install, it might be worth measuring the ID, and the crank snout, to see if you need a machine shop to remove some material (...although it sounds like you already removed some yourself).  The 0.30" between the balancer and cover is probably about right...I think mine was 0.28" when all was said and done.  There are varying opinions about whether the balancer and crank snout should be flush with one another.

Good luck to you!

in my experience the crank snout never comes through the damper to the point of being flush with it

My 440Source oil filled unit was quite a way off being flush with the crank and I installed it with an installer tool. Also the pulleys line up on the alternator etc. I "reamed" my unit out a bit before installing as it was too tight. To do this I used a scotchbrite wheel in a high speed air die grinder. Have at it as it is hard to overdo it if you do a trial fit afer each grind attempt (say 10 secs of hard grinding in a circular motion). You will see when you are getting close. Looking for a firm fit where it would take a hammer to tap it on - but don't use a hammer, use the installation tool.
