I'm not sure if this will help, but a somewhat similar thing happened to me. By 'PROFORM unit', I assume you mean their balancer installer, right? If so, that's great. I underestimated the benefit of a balancer installer!
My balancer (Summit) did not seem to go on all the way, despite me greasing it, heating it, pounding it... I got some good advice from my machine shop. If your oil pan is off, you can reach in there and feel the oil slinger. You can slightly 'wiggle' it with your finger, and keep installing the balancer, until you feel it contact the slinger. (When it contacts, the slinger won't move anymore). At that point, you know it is on far enough.
If that balancer is that hard to install, it might be worth measuring the ID, and the crank snout, to see if you need a machine shop to remove some material (...although it sounds like you already removed some yourself). The 0.30" between the balancer and cover is probably about right...I think mine was 0.28" when all was said and done. There are varying opinions about whether the balancer and crank snout should be flush with one another.
Good luck to you!
