I have gone on the highway 70 -75 and that's about it. I have people flying by me but that's just fine with me. I don't need the tickets and honestly any faster than that doesn't feel all that safe. I have changed my power steering unit and although better it still has more play than I would like at high speed. I also wouldn't want to have to slam my brakes at high speeds because it won't stop quick or safe enough for me. I just like to cruise normal street speeds and I am happy. Maybe one day in the future I can upgrade the suspension and upgrade the brakes.

I have only taken mine to 85mph.  :roflsmiley:

Never been to the drag strip with this car and don't want to drive more than 65mph for any prolonged period with 3.91s in the rear.  Gonna shop for higher gears at the swap meet this weekend.

@ 3,000rpm I wouldn't drive for 10 miles! lol Seriously. Why not change your rear ratio to 3.23 gears?
What gears are you actually running? 4,500rpm sounds very high, even for 80mph. Sounds like 4.50:1+ :sly:

Heck ive gone 3500rpm for 150miles not too long ago. Every other time on the highway before that. Runs just fine, when the engine goes...itll just get faster :D

Top speed on my 71 440 magnum was 160 with an inch or two of peddle left. There is this 4 mile straight coming up on a little town near me. About 5:00 am just as the sun is coming up; what a rush! only did it once though; feel embarrassed talking about it now. What I love the most is hearing the engine making that magical purr at about 60mph through the flow masters. nothing like it. Any old time timer will tell ou that.

about 100mph is the fastest i've been in my 73 cuda, 318 4 speed.
must be 2.73 gears i think as it's got heaps of revs left at that speed.

cruised at about 90+mph for quite a while on some straight, quiet, back roads at night recently.
the road was narrow and in the country side, so quite uneven...  was fun to hear the engine and road noise with the windows down.
wouldn't want to have to turn or stop in a hurry at that speed though...

i prefer to accelerate rather than speed though, and work a car hard through corners.
so my slow and rattly old cuda is terrible for that...    not for long though hopefully!

Quote
: What is the usual topspeed you are driving with your classic E-body?

With traffic at best. 80 mph. A blast to get around someone traveling slower can go to 90 - 95.

Quote
:: What was the fastest you have ever been going in it?

154 mph. Tachometer pinned at 6800 RPM. It just didn't spin any higher.

Quote
:: Longest distance you have been driving at high speeds?

approx. 12 miles @ max speed. Otherwise, everywhere, all day long.

Quote
:: What engine / transmission do you have and what car / year?

1979, .030 over 360 w/ the OE 4spd. (Max speed was obtained with a 2.76 geared 8-3/4 and *I think it was* 255/60/15's tires)
1973 Cuda

Quote
:: Any other modifications you did to it that affect speed and/or handling? [/b]

My front suspension is all new w/ PST parts. Front tires are/were 235/60/15's, OE s/b T-bars, Rear springs.... I can't remember. I think they were OE s/b springs.
The car has a GO-Wing and since you know it is adjustable, it was adjusted, nose down until it remained stable. Othe adjustments went to the front end. Tweaked until it remained stable. The rear shocks were Gabrial air shocks. Tweaked with pressure until it remained stable.

The car had a decent rake, not to wacked looking, and when at high speeds, you can feel the rear of the car sit down.

The engine was fully gone over. It's been years. I've owned the car 21 years now. That particular combo I'm not to sure on any more. The best I can do for sure to tel you about it is that it had a 750 cfm carb, big tube headers and a solid cam that was kind of big for the street. *I think I had a Torker II on top.*

I would guess somewhere near a hundred miles an hour.  I never really drove my 440 six pack any where that I could really open it up.  Plus, I have never felt all too safe running one of these old cars that hard.

I never topped out any E-bodies. I have taken my 71 over 100mph when it had a 383 though. I like the full package myself. I want acceleration, braking and top speed. I can safely say I have driven my neon much faster than any of my E's. I think it is a different state of mind out here in the west with open stretches of straight road and the ability to see for a hundred miles. Something about covering ground quickly that has always appealed to me. Nothing about showing the sack size or anything stupid like that, just good ole honest speed. One reason I have decided to switch my car over now to an OD 4 speed before paint. Carl shot the gear vendors thing all to hell so the only way I can do what I want to do is an OD with highway gears.

Just because it was fine after or fine now, doesn't mean it's good for your car. ;) It's like eating big macs every day. See, I don't get fat. Few years later of that same thing - WHAM, Jenny Craig time.

I have an A-518 overdrive transmission in my Cuda.   And, I was just minding my business coming back from the beach, when a pesty Mitsubishi EVO kept trying to test me.   I just had to teach him that the Fast and the Furious was just a movie and that American muscle needs to be respected.  Well, we punched it from about 50 mph on the highway and I crushed him.  Then, I looked at my Ralley dash speedo and I was at 140.   Whoa!   I freaked out for a moment because I had never gone that fast in my Cuda before.   I let off the gas because I was coming up on traffic and had to weave around some slower moving cars.   Then, started to notice how impressively stable my car felt at those speeds.  No shaking, no excessive vibrations, no significant feelings of instability.  So, the EVO and I kept playing around for a while above 110mph.   I was really impressed with the higher speed characteristics on the e-body.

I have factory sway bars, power steering box and torsion bars.  I added KYB shocks, hemi leaf springs, fully rebuilt front end (bushings, tie rods, everything) and a good front end alignment.   Nothing really special.   Oh, and 15x7 Rally wheels up front and 15x10 Ralley's in the back.
