How to adjust steering wheel neutral position
« on: June 10, 2008 - 04:50:03 PM »
Just starting to de-bug my 73 cuda, driven about ten miles so far, seems to track fine but when going straight down the road the steering wheel is not aligned at 12:00 to top ' it's out by say 10 minutes from 12:00 to go straight . How do you adjust this back, its a manual box, is this due to play in the gears? ........thx......dk

Assuming your front end is aligned OK... you might have my problem. I had to take my steering column out to replace the headers. I didn't get the big knuckle back on the steering box in quite the same position. Just another thing that I need to get to..  :grinyes:

You will probably find that the tie rods on the drivers side is a little longer than the passenger side...it does not take much to make a noticable difference, shorten the left & lengthen the right the same amount till wheel is correct.....of course there's at least a 50/50 chance I got it backwards.

Best to have the toe-in rechecked, as mentioned above, centralise the steering wheel and adjust the toe-in to factoy spec's. It's an easy job for a front end aligner mechanic.

the correct way to center the wheel is to lengthen one tie rod & shorten the other equal amounts to get the wheel centered as mentioned above , make sure your recheck the toe in
