HP tends to be all in the cylinder heads. Cubes are only a way of fine tuning the powerband and of course adding torque, but in a light car with the right gears it isn't as important. With a wicked flowing set of heads im sure you could perform right up there with 340's. You may need more gear and a higher stall and you wouldn't want to use a high revving, peaky motor in a heavy car but if done right there is no reason why you can't hang with built 340's in the 12's or better. At least that's my take on it, and hey, theres always the great replacement for displacement....F/I or nitrous.

Hey, what about the old 273? nobody thinks of those...Great motors capable of good power if built right. I have one in a 67 barracuda, .060 over with 318 pistons in it and a fairly large cam...i can tell there's plenty of power in it, but we haven't rebuilt the tranny yet so most of the power is lost.. :working:

Way back in the beginning of time (ok, it was 1981), I had a friend with a 1974 Duster. The original slant 6 was pulled, and a 318 was installed. After a couple of 7 1/4" diffs were put unceremoniously out to pasture, he found a 1970 Duster parts car. We swapped in the 318 and the 8 3/4" diff with limited slip 3.55 gears, and re-tuned the Holley Economaster 2V carb. This thing flat screamed! It only had the stock 318 manifolds and 2" duals with glasspacks, but it was a real scooter. One day, my friend was driving, and a '69 Firebird 350 HO challenged him to a race. He stepped on the gas, and promptly blew the poor 'Bird driver away! They pulled into a parking lot up the road a piece, where the Firebird owner demanded to see under my friend's hood. With a huge grin on his face, my friend opened the hood to reveal a 318-2V with stock exhaust manifolds. This guy spent almost half of an hour looking for the hidden nitrous oxide system, and would not believe that he had been walked on by a 318 with a two barrel! My friend offered to put the 'Bird owner in touch with me, so I could tune his car like the Duster. I never heard from him. 318s RULE!

one of my coworkers has a 93(not sure) Dakota with the stock 318 and that thing is bad ass. He raced my boss who has a 99 Camaro Z/28 with a modified LS1(440rwhp). One night they raced down the road that runs in front of where I work. That Dakota was runnin damn close with my boss's Camaro
I have nothing. go ahead and laugh. but when I get my something, prepare to be awed
