front manual drum brake question
« on: June 19, 2008 - 06:54:02 PM »
Ok, my dad needs to replace the front 10" x 2 1/2" brake drum and one hub on his 70 Chally.  He was able to locate a used matched set from a 72 or 73 Chally to try and get the hubs from.  Would the brake drums and hubs be the same as the 70 models or was there a change in production?  Also, are cuda front drums the same as the challys?

Thanks,

Brian

The Cuda drums should be the same as the Challenger, but I can't answer about interchange between years.  If you need a hub/spindle and front drums off a '70, I can sell you my old ones.  I don't know how much life is left in the drums, but you can still buy new ones.  If interested, PM me and I'll send you photos.

I think the only changes would be when they went to larger wheel bearings. Maybe check with a parts store and see if the donor vehicle and yours use the same front wheel bearings. you can also just swap the drums off the donor hubs if they (the hubs) are different, if you cut the "swedged" part of the lug nut stud away. The staked or swedged part of the lug stud is what holds the drum on the hub. When you buy new drums they don't come with hubs.

If the car was not a numbers matching car I would have persuaded dad to go that way also.  However, since this is a totally numbers matching car that has a build sheet and all, we want to try and keep it totally stock like it was from the factory.  Granted, there are a few things that are on the car now that will have to be removed to get it back to stock such as the headers, 4 bbl edelbrock intake and the like since 318s never had a 4 bbl or headers but luckily when we got the car, the owner had all of the original parts saved and tucked away and threw them in with the car.  What is unique about this car is that it has a factory red interior.  As I recall, I have not seen that many red interior convertibles so I can only guess that it to be a lower production number car.  On top of that, it is a fairly early built car also being produced around late September of 69.

I would at least grab a 11X3" drum system for the front
