How about custom VALVE COVERS?
« on: July 29, 2008 - 02:12:26 PM »
After seeing a post about custom emblems, I remembered my recent search for custom valve covers...

I did some searching on the web and found places that do a lot of custom Chevy stuff, but no one really advertising any Mopar stuff.  One site did have Mopar valve covers that you could add text to on top of a (somewhat cheesy) flame graphic, but that's not what I'm looking for.

I'm looking to get my "JS Customs" logo - a script, overlapping 'J' and 'S' with "CUSTOMS" alongside, preferably stamped into a chrome valve cover from the outside.  Actually I'd probably even prefer a polished or brushed aluminum.

Anyone know where I could go to have something like this made?

Find a machine shop in your area that has a laser CNC machine and have them quote the cut out for you. Then epoxy the cut out to the valve cover of your choice.

Or buy fabricated aluminum valve covers and have the design sand blasted in to them. Good sources for intricate sandblasting are usually found at places that supply headstones to graveyards.

I tried a bunch of googling but couldn't find anything.  I'm looking for an actual indent look - embossed.  I can do it by hand - fabricate a stamp and then a matching reverse stamp and using a hydraulic press to squeeze the valve cover between the two stamps.  But I rather find someone who can use professional equipment to do it.

The last option of course is to get it airbrushed with high-temp paints.

Just wondering if anyone knew any direct sources.

Jeff, as a tool and die maker what you are looking for is not cheap nor easy.

An actual embossing like that would require custom made stencils with them loaded into a tool that is then set in a press with enough tonnage to then re-form the metal into the lettering you want.

When someone is stamping like that, they are not doing just a couple, many are needed to offset the required tooling cost.

As far as stamping or pressing them yourself, you could do it they way you described, but with that you will only be able to set a letter or 2 at a time, and as you know, they will not have a "designed" look for the logo you wanted.

I take it engraving is not an option. Sorry it's not the best pic. Pete

Well, I had thought about engraving, but you can't really do "images" with engraving.

This is my logo:

I figure if nothing else I can press the "JS" logo (I'm going to leave the 'C' out) and then just paint on the word "CUSTOMS."

I have the JS image embroidered into the headrests of my Stratus - I absolutely love it.  I want the logo on the engine somewhere (visible) because I'm actually going to be the one building it.  I could just paint it or have a decal cut for the air cleaner, but I want something a little more unique.

There is nothing so complex in that design that it couldnt be loaded into an NC and carved right into the top of an aluminum valve cover. You then highlight the etch with the paint color of your choice and there you go. Once that program is set, you have it to put into anything else of similar dimensions.
