Checking the tach

Hi guys,

Is there any way for me to check the tach while the guage cluster is out of the car?  I'm cleaning my cluster and I've been able to test all the other guages except the tach.

  You would have to connect the tach to the "-" side of the coil, +12 volts, and ground. So the answer is "NO".   

There is no simple measurement that you can make out of the car.  I have taken the tach out of the cluster and run leads to the appropriate connections to check things out. I left the tach sitting under my hood in a place that was visable from the driver's seat(hood up, of course).

I have the little tach calibrator that RTE sells.  If you want to borrow it, I'll mail it down to you.  The idea of the calibrator is that it puts out particular frequencies (like 1000 rpm) and you can twist some pots on their replacement board, so the tach is registering correctly.  The stock tach circuit board doesn't have the adjustments, but you could see if you're close.

If you click on manuals there is one for V-6 / V-8 Tach Re-Cal   Half way down they explain how to use a battery charger as a source.   

Never tried it myself, but there it is.
