Between Coats
« on: July 02, 2008 - 09:46:09 AM »
From my recent posts you may have guessed that I am new at the painting side of working on cars. And hope you don't mind another dumb question. I've finished priming my parts and about to spray the base coat. I know I need to rough up the primed surface with some 400grit paper but should I also wipe it down again with wax and grease remover or would that be to aggressive of a cleaner? Or would wiping it down with water be good enough?

I would go over the 400 grit paper with 600 grit , 400 is way too coarse, esspecially if it a metalic paint.. Trust me,  i have been doing body and paint work for 25+ years!!!

Todd, I am going to shoot my engine compartment, jambs and trunk with black, would you use 600 there also?

I agree with Todd, go with 600, even in the engine compartment. Wipe it down and use a tack rag too.
