manual vs power brakes?
« on: March 05, 2004 - 12:27:49 AM »
i'm looking at wilwood or maybe another company. tough to find parts cars here so i wanna buy new brakes, lines, everything.  going drums to discs all around.  will larger brakes force me to ditch my 14" wheels up front? i'd be willing to. i want maximum stopping power for a street car. pros and cons of manual vs power? open to all suggestions......

with manual you will get more feel & have plenty of stooping power might as well go to 15 " wheels & get better tires at the same time

most of us are into fast, if you take off the power steering its steels no power, saves weight and same with the power brake booster   ie less hp robbed and less weight = faster mopar

and there's more room to work
you work out a little each drive, how many people don't need this and a lot of people will shy away from your strong man car ;D ;D ;D

Since I'm a girl, I had to vote power...not that having power makes it a "girl" car!!  I just wouldn't want the workout everytime I used the brake.  However, old ladies bought cars without power brakes and drove them with no problems.  I guess I'm just a wuss. :-[

My 'Cuda HAD 4 wheel 10" drums all around... plenty of stopping power UNTIL the weather got warm and I started getting the car a little faster... then I would starting getting some brake fade... ::) ::)

It's just one of those things you'll have to decided... I personally like a hard pedal and my Grand Am drives me nuts as it's a soft(er) pedal from the factory... I've done just about everything I can to get it harder.... ::) ::)

i currently have manual drums, the pedal is a little hard but its alright w/ me, the only problem is that when the brakes are applied, especuially at higher speeds, the car will randomly pull to either the right or left.  my suspension has all been redone so its only the brakes to blame. i bought the car w/ this brake system, which the previous owner used DOT5.  i cant buy affordable DOT 3 cuz it will gum up my system.  why u u put dot 5 in a car? i think it does not allow moisture in the system????

I never have.  I was only speaking from imagination...not experience.  Maybe someone at Carlisle would let me try it out  ::)  ::)

I voted for manual brakes.  Mine has power brakes right now and I'll see how things work out when it's running again.  The only problem I'm going to have is with a larger camshaft, I'm going to need a vacuum canister to help regulate the vacuum needed for the power-assisted brakes.
So, the decision is really your choice, but I will say that I would most likely be switching from power to manuals on mine.
