like doesn`t work , most Hughes Rockers are alum & I would rather use the ductile iron for street use

that is what I use they are available in 1.5 or 1.6  ratio as  well

Finaly got around to being able to call up Chris over at Engle, he, of course, doesn't approve of Hughes, he pretty much said that they grind there cams with to fast of a ramp on a small duration... Anyway, he suggested the K58/K60 cam. The lift is .514"/.534" 230*/238* @ .050 duration. Will have it ground on a 3 bolt pattern instead of the one bolt. As for lobe seperation, I need to make my mind up on either a 110 or 108.... I do plan on running power brakes, but can run a vacuum reservoir.... I am wanting a rough idle, so the 108 would be better for the idle, but... Anyways... Also, I will be getting springs through them too so I know they'll be right.


Got to wondering.... Basedon the build list below, roughly how much power do you think this motor will have about? I've put no thought into this, but I got to discussing it, and got to wondering about roughly how much power this motor may make... Originaly, I was hoping for alteast 1 horse power per cid, and total cid should be like 405.9 (406).... So I'd say something like 410 should be nice for a 400.... But based on the info below, I'm thinking it's gonna be more, but have no clue as to what to expect.... :dunno: So, in your opinion, what u think?
400 (+.030)
Block decked for trueness
Heads shaved to even it up (if warped)
516 heads, 2.08 intake, 1.81 exhaust (exh ports ported as previously discussed, intake ports cleaned up a little)
Factory steel crank
Factory type connecting rods (with ARP hardware)
Engle Cam, K58K60 lets say on a 108* l/s
Double roller chain
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
Proform street series 750 cfm carb with electric choke and mechanical secondaries
Mopar Vacuum advance distributor with Jacobs Electronics Pro Street Kit 8mm wires minimum and which ever plugs
Milodon oil pan, factory diameter pick up tube, with high volume oil pump kit
ATI Damper
K&N X-Stream air cleaner
Maybe the Jegs 1" Edge Spacer.....
Cast aluminum valve covers
ARP bolts/studs through out
Steel flywheel with dual friction clutch and (hopefully) roller pilot bearing
Aftermarket mini starter
Tube headers, probably the ones from Schumacher....
Did I miss anything?

with headers you can get away with the 108* CL better , it will move the power band up slightly but that won`t hurt either as long as you have a converter to work with it if it is going in front of an auto
 I would expect to see something in the 450 Gross HP range which is conservative ,probably better

what a pleasent suprise finding this thread as I have been collecting parts for a 400 build.I originally was going to build a stroker but reality checked in and I've decided if I could find a set of good pistons/cost I would go with the 400,here's what I have:
'73 400 block that's been tanked and mag'd
383 steel crank that I basicly got for nothing,it's been turned and knife edged.I don't know for sure it's good or not as I've never had it checked.
as set of 452's with ss 2.08/1.81 valves,ported in the bowls and runners,bronze guides,new locks,ti retainers and Hemi springs.
a demon 750 carb that's supposed to flow 900 cfm.
I can take pics of all this stuff if you guys are intrested in inspecting and offering advice,if you can from pics over the net.
the set up will be in a '70 B-'cuda with 727 and 3:91 rear.I'm planning on starting the build this fall and into the winter as the body work on my car is getting close thanks to not being busy at work.
I'm real interested in the piston choice as the only 400 pistons I know of are the KB's and decking the block but I would like better options.

Check with Brandon @ 440 source , I though he had a stock 400 piston available ... maybe not though
 any Piston Company will make you a 400 piston in forged but cost is the issue , Diamond , JE , Ross , WIseco will all make them

I had already checked with 440 source, no standard stroke 400 pistons... :-\. The only ones that they carry are Ross custom pistons in the $700 range.... Ouch. But being custom, it will allow pretty much any and all possibilities open.... I'm wondering if I run the Ross forged flat top piston, with the 516 head, the Engle K58/K60 with 1.5 rockers, possibly the gasket offered by 440 Source: http://www.440source.com/gaskets.htm they are thick, but when looking at possibly having to have some milling done, well... May come in handy.... But I'm wondering if the flat tops will work, to keep a rough 10:1 compression ratio, and if there will be enough piston to valve clearance.... :working:

you can use the Steel shim Mopar gaskets for $30 / pair as long as the piston is .020 under the deck

I was kind of hoping that the thicker gasket would help offset any machine work done, as far as intake/head alignment.... If I can get away with using the steel shim head gasket, then... :cheers:
