4 Speeds
« on: March 30, 2004 - 12:48:40 PM »
I'm a little bit confused! The 833 is a 4 speed manual and also the 833 OD is a 4 speed manual or is their a 5th gear  for the Over drive????? How does this work??
Also I have a 3 speed manual trans bolted on a 318cid will my bell housing/ z-bar/ clutch fork work or do I need to replace them?
Thanks for your help!

As for the 4 speeds, the OD is basically an 833 with 4th gear being 1:1 and 3rd being a .73 overdrive.  The 3rd - 4th gear lever on the tranny is inverted so that you shift  1 - 2 - 4 - 3.  This means that in OD you are not going straight through the tranny, they had to beef them up a bit to offset it.

The three speed and four speeds had a different mounting pattern, see this article:

http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/techarticles/40618/

This one has a good rundown on the four speed trannys:

Hope this helps,

Just picked up a 833 OD 23 spline from a 87 dodge truck for 100 bucks and thats canadian dollars   ha ha.
My question is, where's a good place to buy a 4 speed shifter and  linkages? and also does the regular 4 speed shifter fit the OD unit?
My input bearing retainer is 5.125" but my bell housing is around 4.3", do I have to mill the bell housing or the bearing retainer? or can I do both, it looks like if I drill the bell housing to 5.125" it will interfere with the fork attach.
My current bell housing is off a 3 Speed manual if that helps.

Thanks for the help

I f you got the shifter with the tranny all you need is the shift rods , Brewers has thm available , you can also use a Hurst Comp + shifter , you will need a shifter mounting plate though Brewers has them too
For the bel housing you need to either get an OD bel for the small block witha 5.125 hole or you can machine the front retainer down to 4.80 & possibly machine the bel up to 4.80 as well

Chryco
I did not get the shifter with the tranny. Will the mounting plate for the 4 speed shifter be the same as the 3 speed shifter. Does Brewers have a web site?
The Hurst shifter, is it for a OD uint or a regular 4 speed?

Brewers doesn`t have a web site , phone is 937-698-4259
I`m not sure if the 3 spd plate is the same , it may be < the shifters are interchangable from 4spd to 4spd OD
