Question for you paint/body guys?
« on: June 21, 2008 - 05:12:11 PM »
I am in the process of striping my cuda for a paint job. I have to do this on a pretty tight budget so I am doing all the prep work myself but will have someone shoot the paint and clear coat. I almost have the car stripped by sanding and chemical stripers. I am going to use all PPG products and paint. After getting to bare metal I will use DX330 wax and grease remover---then DX579 meatal cleaner and DX520 metal cond.---then shoot a coat of DP50LF epoxy primer. When I picked up my supplies the paint shop gave me DP401LF catalyst to use. In going back ovver Farmboys restos I see he likes the DP402LF better. Is there that much difference in the two that I should get the 402 instead of the 401?  After doing a little body filler  what is a good high build primer ? Then the real fun can begin.   :faint:   Was hoping to be done by the middle of July----Now I just hope to be done by this fall.  Definately labor intensive but you learn a lot doing it yourself.   Thanks   Doug

as far as stuf goes i would sand the whole car with #80 wipe with laqure thinner shoot the dplf what ever color ya got and then coat within 3-4 days with a poly besed high build primer. i like evercoat products
http://www.evercoat.com/products.aspx
reson to shoot the expoy then the poly bsed primer in 3-4 days is it says 7-10 on the epsct sheet but it may in high heat be out of the window faster. The PPG here said 3-4 days max and top coat so it bonds well if not then you have to use a red pad then wipe with dx330 and recoat with DP again.

I like poly based since the filler is poly and so is the spot putty so it is all poly but thats just me
take a look at Slick Sand primer and the Polyester Glazing Putty.
The PPG place here sells the PPG paints but the evercoat primers and fillers

He helped me out tons when I cleaned up my engine bay.I used a NCP-270 PPG high build primer. It really was nice to work with. sanded better, kept it's gloss. Can't wait to try it on the body.

I used the 402 as well.  Looking at the PPG "p-sheet" it appears the difference is that the 402 dries faster.  Plus once you mix the 401 you have to let it sit for 30 minutes before spraying (induction period) which isn't requried with the 402.   Once it's dry I'm assuming that the results are the same.

You might see if you can return it to get the 402.  :dunno:

I would go with the 401, slower drying, better flow, who the hell cares if u gotta wait 30 min, and u can also do your bondo work (body filler)  over top of it. Always go over bare metal with epoxy primer!!!!! :ylsuper:

I use the 401,great stuff!I let it sit 45 mins as it thinkens up a bit and won't run on you as easy.I also like the UTech 2k uro prime.it builds fast, sand easy, has great hold out and dose'nt smell as bad as some other primers I've used.

i'm pretty sure the p-sheet says you don't have to use metal conditioner or cleaner before shooting DP, so you can save some money there.
